One line can bloodwake a bruised spirit –

starve winterdark with truth-tongued verse;

kindle a dawn of stanza-born light.

Sisyphus, Unfortunately

                        a piano uphill,             They push

                        Sisyphus with better hats.

            But the piano disagrees.

Left, they push.                         Right, it rolls.
                         A duet in gravity.
                                                 Laurel slips;                                                 Hardy follows—
                        entropy in bowlers.

            (a pause)

                        At the summit,                                     they breathe.

                        The piano rolls
                                    back down.

                        Again, says Laurel.

            Below, Sisyphus                         checks his watch,
                                    sees the piano coming –

                                                            and ducks.

EARLIER NOW

Greenish constellations touched with rust
 colonise the corner of the window frame.

Curtain at half-mast rehearsing the dark.

Sycamore key smudged against glass.

The last halo of evening is earlier now.

Already autopsied, the light obscures her face
 as if it knows where her sun will set.
