1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria. 2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae. 3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish. The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists following their curiosity, and this is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!

Interested in cancer-associated thrombosis? We are proposing a PACE postdoctoral fellowship to study it in a joint effort between the Crick and UCL. If this sounds interesting, apply here: A dangerous NETwork: neutrophils and cancer-associated thrombosis @TheCrick www.crick.ac.uk/careers-stud...

I have a copy and can send if you email me

Keen to discuss this - it would be good if Figshare were easier to use. I really miss the unlimited data storage I think i had at UCSF as with limited allowance here I am not sure I can keep all raw data from light sheet imaging sessions... fearful that this will cause problems in future.

Nikon have made the right choice and an important discussion has been started on acceptable use of AI in microscopy. Look at this weird little guy (now 5th place, a sea slug captured by Igor Adameyko)!!

Join >300 scientists, clinicians, patients and charity workers by signing this letter demanding a transparent & positive resolution after an AI-generated movie claiming to represent an airway of a child with PCD was awarded 1st place in Nikon's video-microscopy contest:

It is wrong that a largely AI-generated movie has been awarded 1st prize in the Nikon Small World in Motion competition. If you agree and want microscopy competitions and research to stay rooted in reality, please co-sign this letter:

For this programme it is best if applicants have British/Irish citizenship or settled status, strong interest in pharmacology and some experience in lung/immunology/mouse model research.

Great opportunity for someone looking for a PhD. If you know someone who might be interested in working on new approaches to treat inflammatory lung conditions, do encourage them to email me with a CV and statement on why they are interested in PhD studies.

Since this year #NobelPrize is for #optogenetics, here is one of my favorite systems, the optoRas. Originally designed for neutrophils, I adapted this to my embryonic myeloid cells! I use it to induce a new protrusion and drives this EM cell to go backward. #MicroscopyMonday

Winner furiously trying to reverse engineer raw data using ChatGPT. Judges trying to meet but keep getting distracted by tiktok dramas about humanoid fruits, tung tung tung sahur dance videos, Rastawartz...

Having seen the news:

thought I'd share a cilia movie captured at UCL GOS ICH with Eriomina Shahaj & Vanesa Papastavrou using simple DIC on a Nikon Ti2 with DIC at 60x1.4. 500 fps here slowed down 20 times. Processed with Nikon's denoiseAI and an unsharp mask in Fiji.

It was good that Nature News did comment on the winner's unwillingness to show non-edited images. It is telling and was missed in the pieces from The Scientist and BBC News.

@simoncleary.bsky.socialOct 1, 2026, 10:54 AM

This stood out in the Nature news coverage. I don't think that we will ever get to see the underlying data.

The SynthID watermark is a smoking gun. It means Google or ChatGPT AI image generating software was used. There is no appropriate reason for these tools to be used in microscopy.

@simoncleary.bsky.socialOct 1, 2026, 6:06 AM

Rule: no AI-generated images. The winner confessed to AI-generating all details in lower half of image! SynthID watermark present, so an inappropriate Google/chatGPT AI generation tool was used. Movie also biologically implausible - we are told it is one cell but it is over 50 microns wide!

@simoncleary.bsky.socialOct 1, 2026, 5:58 AM

Nikon: '"At this time, we don't see that any rules were violated," it said in a statement.'

Applications are open for our new fellowship programme with @lifearc.bsky.social 🚀

The scheme supports clinician scientists to build the skills, networks and experience needed to turn innovations in rare diseases into real-world impact.

See eligibility and apply: bit.ly/4z1bUNQ

Professor Sir Andrew Morris, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences, next to a quote that reads: "With LifeArc, this fellowship gives clinician scientists in rare disease research the funding, mentoring and connections to put their research to use for the patients who are still waiting for it."
