2 more Norfolk ponds!!! As part of our new Coast Ghosts Pilot project we have resurrected 2 near-sea #ghostponds. 5 days of digging & now we just need rain!!! The ponds will bring more clean freshwater to the coastal strip. Huge benefits for migrant birds. #coastghosts @ournorfolkcoast.bsky.social

Going down!!! We started our new "Coast Ghosts Pilot" project today funded by @ournorfolkcoast.bsky.social. This coastal #ghostpond was filled in during the 1980s & we had to dig down 2.8 m to find it below all sorts of infill. Norfolk nearly has 1 more pond back! @timholtwilson.bsky.social

Crassula will come straight back after plastic. Maybe from seed. Key is to dig & pick it out. Pls email me & will send u a guide we done to SUCESSFUL Crassula removal as achieved across 10 ponds at Thompson Common.

@carlsayer.bsky.socialSep 1, 2026, 10:47 PM

Crassula can be eradicated with some effort.

Out in Breckland today, the 'ghost pond' team @carlsayer.bsky.social @hburningham.bsky.social excavating a backfilled Ice Age doline pit, had to contend with sediments full of smelly burnt wood, barbed wire and mutilated tree trunks, before reaching the sought-after organic-rich sediment layers.

They are hoping to find seeds buried in the mud which might be in a fit state to sprout again.Two people taking sediment cores from the dark-coloured floor of a 'ghost pond' excavation trench about 6 ft / 2 m deep. Not sure always true. Often find that ponds with pond-associated fish v good for amphibians, esp toad but also Great Crested Newt. Quite a few myths on ponds re fush vs amphibians. Where ponds are high quality & full of plants there is good co-existence of all sorts of prey & predators.

Maybe that ghost ponds = ponds dug in optimal places years ago by people with more intimate knowledge of their parish?

@carlsayer.bsky.socialAug 30, 2026, 4:31 PM

So interesting!!!

1 ghostpond + 1 digger for 2 days + 2 years = 41 wetland plants + 2 national rarities. #ghostpond

Long lived seeds?

Selbrigg Pond, North Norfolk, eastern England. A small shallow lake fed by woodland seepage & hence v. low nutrient concentrations. While many other lakes & ponds are murky due to the heat, Selbrigg is crystal clear & vibrant with life. Low nutrients = greater resilience to climate change & warming
