What does the health of the soil beneath our feet have to do with the price of food on our supermarket shelves? Quite a lot, actually, writes Martin Lines. After a summer of extreme drought, the case for farming that works with nature has rarely been stronger.

They "won't go" there if they are racists because they might discover that the mixture of people from diverse backgrounds are peaceable folk going about their daily business in streets and homes, and that the racism is coming from their own side - projected intense shadow psychology.

Silver Birch magic. The visual and textural contrasts in its bark: mithraic light and dark, smooth and rough. Is there a word for the pleasure of looking at birch bark? Betulismus? Björkenscrute? Beithenfreud? It should be a word which enacts contrasts, leaps the stave, sings the rum wonder.

The sunlight-dappled bark of a birch tree looking up the trunk into its leafy canopy, with pale blue sky beyond. Little Englander adventurism - beast with two heads : beast with two backsides - Tory hyperclones busy cultivating racist discontent of The Plebs in the service of City Slickers - gambling on break-up of the UK.
