🥳We are very excited to see work starting on one of our biggest ever wetland restoration sites.
Now, after lots of planning and preparation, the diggers have arrived to turn an area almost the size of Hyde Park into a thriving wetland.

I stumbled across your web app through a search, and it's brilliant, and great fun. I wanted to see distribution of 'elm' placenames and it's wonderfully thorough. Thanks for sharing - it needs to be more widely known!

Strelitzia nicolai is bird-pollinated in an unusual way. Perching birds, like this Cape weaver (Ploceus capensis), pick up the pollen on their feet! 📷: Andrew Core CCBYNC4. #Strelitziaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

I've written Joe Harkness's obituary for the Guardian. I hope it pays good tribute to a wonderful man who was brave, honest and made the world a better place. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I remember seeing Margaret Attwood at the IOC in Vancouver in 2018 - the closest thing to Canadian royalty?! Excellent to see a chair in Ornithology being endowed - see quoted tweet for direct details & more background in this @theguardian.com article
I nearly didn't post this one from Private Eye. Then thought 'Go on. @justrena.bsky.social would have loved it'. I hope so.

I'm not good enough at fungi to run courses, but I lead quite a lot of guided walks, and that's just the sort of explanation that people will remember :-)
Lovely way to describe it - I might use that in future if that's ok!
Quite emotional to report that we've just found our amazing survivor Marsh Tit, still here in his ancient woodland kingdom. He's now 11 yrs 4 months old, survived the 2026 heatwaves/drought and smelt the wildfires of nearby Holme Fen. I ringed him in my 30s and I'm now in my 50s.

I had my first, in Bucks, at Rushmere, near Beds border, in August 2011: www.flickr.com/photos/clado... and it turned up in a light trap in Histon, Cambridge, this July.
Interesting fungal find:
This parasitic plant fungus (Exobasidium karstenii) lives exclusively on bog-rosemary (Andromeda polifolia) and makes some of the leaves much broader, and purple.
The green and the purple leaves here are the same plant!
