Even bigger announcement: Skeleton has won Best Paper (top 1%) at IEEE VIS this year!! 🎉 VIS is my home community and I am deeply indebted to many of the people in it. I take a little time to pontificate on what "best paper" means to me (or rather, what I think it should really be about):

Child mortality has declined in all world regions. In 1950, almost one in four children worldwide died before their fifth birthday. In Africa, one in three children died. The chart shows the change since then. In every region, the mortality rate of children has declined.

With both Lake Powell and Lake Mead at record-lows, here’s a look at how their water levels have varied since Powell was filled in 1980. Neither has recovered from a severe drought in the early 2020s, while Colorado River flows continue to drop.

#dataviz #climate #globalwarming

Two graphs of water stored in Lake Powell (left) and lake Mead (right). The data are measured over the water year, which runs from October 1st to October 1st. Years when the lake level increased are marked in blue, years when they decreased are marked in red. Levels in Lake Powell maxed out at about 24-million-acre–feet in the early 1980s, and are currently just over 5-million-acre-feet. Lake Mead was just over 25-million acre-feet in the early 1980s and late 1990s, but is now just under 7-million acre-feet.

Do you know where PIER 39’s historic sea lion counts live? I’m building a visualization of San Francisco’s seasonal rhythms for Chartography and looking for dated K-Dock counts. cc: @heatherknightsf.bsky.social & @burritojustice.bsky.social

Snuck a short history of floating bar charts into this blogpost.

I did not know that McKinsey is responsible for "waterfall" charts before writing this! Thank you @jasonforrest.bsky.social for the tips. dbtcharts.com/blog/you-ask...

I did this recently for our place in SF and was surprised how much information is still locked away in micro film. Also, AI agent was insanely great at digging up tons of information I would not have found in any other way.

'You'll choke too' - I wanted to reshare my wildfire aerial embroidery now summer is finally over as it really meant a lot to me. Autumn is here but as the fruit ripened much earlier than normal, I worry the little birds and animals won't have enough for the winter...

An embroidery hoop containing an embroidered aerial view landscape. The landscape depicts a burning wildfire, with dry forest on the right and smoke on the left, with a line of bright flames down the centre.

I'll wrap this thread as it's moved in many directions beyond panel breaking weirdness and into general comics space/time cool-ness, but good to close with something from Fred - from the Philemon books (annoyingly still not in English - though I bought this one in Paris) - these are such a treat!

a page from Fred's Philemon - it's like a 9-panel grid page if it were ice cube trays and turned sideways to the reader so it becomes an architectural space. Philemon moves through it and leaves the cubesa page from Fred's Philemon - looking at comics pages that are curled towards us, like a sheet of cloth or paper that they are supposed to be, on them you can see a comic there, but also the characters are outside of this and interact with some of the panels and in fact fall through it and knock some of the panels out of the layout
