@bennethclarke.bsky.social said the "fingerprints of climate change are clear to see in these long-term changes." “While this is a complex event, our analysis brings together scientists with a diverse range of expertise to set out the factors that likely contributed to this catastrophe." (5/6)
The disaster was also preceded by unusually warm summer temperatures with the 3 days prior over 5C above average. Climate change has pushed July/Aug temperatures in the region up by about 1.5C to date, and 2C annually - surpassing the average global rate (about 1.4C to date). (4/6)
Geological factors are also likely to have played a role. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 is likely to have further preconditioned the slope for collapse, and potentially opened new cracks for meltwater ingress. (3/6)
A team of WWA scientists and glaciologists found that the collapse was a compound disaster with climate change worsening factors including glacial thinning, melting permafrost and meltwater ingress - with the freezing line (0C isotherm) rising by about 100m per decade (2/6)
NEW: Climate change is influencing many of the likely drivers behind the devastating rock and ice collapse on the northern Nepalese border last month. 🧵👇(1/6)
🌊 Climate change is causing European sea surface temperatures to surge: marine ecosystems are suffering 🌊 World Weather Attribution scientists analysed the record-breaking SSTs in Europe’s waters in July. They found that the event was primarily driven by climate change. (1/5)
Devastating floods in Assam were worsened by human factors - but not necessarily climate change. WWA scientists analysed the recent monsoon downpours that resulted in floods that killed at least 99, displaced hundreds of thousands and inundated tens of thousands of hectares of cropland. (1/4)
Human-induced climate change made the extreme fire weather that fuelled the recent destructive wildfires at least twice as likely in France and at least 20 times more likely in Spain, according to our new study.
➡️ Climate change is driving drought in Europe - but not how you might expect. While there isn't a clear signal for climate change impacting the dry weather, extreme heat is sucking more moisture out of the landscape. (1/3)
NEW: Climate change supercharged the rainfall that caused deadly flooding that killed almost 100 in Togo, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire. The most extreme rainfall fell between June 20-22 across coastal regions with more than 140mm falling in less than 24 hours in some major cities. (1/5)
🔥NEW: Our study finds the ongoing European heatwave would have been impossible without climate change (1/6)
NEW: An estimated 7% of the entire population of the critically-endangered Tapanuli Orangutan were killed in a single weather event, according to research led by Borneo Futures with @frediotto.bsky.social as an author. An estimated 58 Orangutans were killed by landslides during Cyclone Senyar (1/4)
NEW STUDY: Winter downpours are getting heavier in parts of Spain, Portugal and Morocco as the region recovers from a month of relentless storms. Between mid-January and mid-February nine named storms brought torrential rain hurricane force winds causing major damage and disruption. 1/5
