After a year of many experiencing the brutal reality of climate change, not least in Nepal, COP31 will happen & could provide an opportunity to bring the urgent need to massively accelerate global action on climate change back in focus- maybe - we'll talk about it: www.imperial.ac.uk/events/21370...

Heute wird der westfälische Friedenspreis an die NATO verliehen. Die Frauen in der Jury hatten viele konstruktive Vorschläge für alternative Preisträger gemacht, konnten sich aus unerfindlichen Gründen aber nicht durchsetzen.

What are known causal factors behind rock-ice avalanche near Nepal–Tibet border? @wwattribution.bsky.social Vulnerable slope, potentially weakened by 2015 earthquake, definitely destabilised by climate change through glacier retreat & permafrost thaw. www.worldweatherattribution.org/rapid-warmin...

🧵CO₂ removal (CDR) is back in the news, but just because the UNEP report says we need CDR, it doesn't mean we'll have CDR. Many challenges will take decades of research and negotiation to solve. Here are some examples: Technological: We currently don't have any durable CDR method that scales.

I think the way to read the UNEP report isn't "we'll miss the 1.5°C target so we need CDR to reach it", but "we'll miss the 1.5°C target, and we need to decarbonize ASAP because wherever we end up is where we will stay for a long time."

Europe’s seas are experiencing heat that would have been virtually impossible in a pre-industrial climate. In the Mediterranean, summer SSTs have intensified by 3°C, far exceeding global warming, destroying marine life & dramatically altering our seas.

Yet another fire season that has been made more severe due to the burning of fossil fuels - displacing communities, killing ecosystems, putting huge strain on health systems & fire fighting capacities. New @wwattribution.bsky.social study on Canada www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...

Three graphics showing months of the year on the x-axis, burned area on the y-axis for Canada as a whole and Ontario and the Northwest Territories separately. Highlighting the years 2026, 2025, 2024 and 2023 as well as the 2003-2022 mean.

A succession of heatwaves and very dry conditions - both driven by human-induced climate change, fueld the severe wildfires in Spain and France - new @wwattribution.bsky.social study www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...

Map of Southern France and Northern Spain with the burnt area in July highlighted as red polygons and the study areas around Madrid and Bordeaux outlined.

250 years of burning fossil fuels fuelled a record shattering humid heatwave in Eastern North America for the 250th anniversary celebrations on 4th of July. Turning any outdoor activities into a dangerous health risk. - @wwattribution.bsky.social

Europe's worst heatwave so far, in terms of heat stress measures and temperatures - brought to you by fossil fuels. New @wwattribution.bsky.social study showing how such deadly heat became possible in only a few decades. www.worldweatherattribution.org/fossil-fuel-...

A map of Europes with dots for all 854 cities analysed, pink dots for the cities that broke humid heat records, grey dots elsewhere. Pink dots conentrated over Southern UK, Germany, Poland and Benelux.
