There is something to be said about being forced to confront the reality of our laws to see if we can sit comfortably with them when they aren’t abstract. But this obviously isnt an attempt to ask Americans to have a moral reckoning with the gravity of our policies. It’s just ghoulish for show.

It is hypocritical for cities to use AI for mass surveillance and then turn around and claim their technology is too outdated to fulfill public records requests about said mass surveillance. If you can afford these cameras, you can afford to tell the public about them.

@laurenleharper.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 8:21 PM

A city in Texas is basically saying that there are potentially SO MANY responsive records about how it abused Flock cameras, it'll take 14 years to find all the records and cost $2.3 million.

Also from AO's FOIA work today: www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...

Just gonna go out on a limb and say if you can't trust an agency not to straight-up lie to a judge, you probably shouldn't trust them with taser-gloves

Awesome FOIA work from @americanoversight.org

DHS detains hundreds of US citizens in private centers- making GEO Group and others billions. ICE gives local cops up to $2M per immigration arrest. Yet ICE couldn't figure out how to pay for body cameras for months. And DHS can't get it's FOIA office on track so the public can conduct oversight.

CDC surprised to learn the Trump administration wants transparency and honesty from a health agency.

@laurenleharper.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 6:22 PM

Yup

@laurenleharper.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 5:35 PM

Makes sense if you're trying to do all the post-watergate transparency reforms (like the PRA, etc.)

@laurenleharper.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 5:27 PM

Miami-Dade made $2 million per immigration arrest in one quarter alone.

@laurenleharper.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 5:26 PM

DHS can give local cops $137K a year to detain TWO WHOLE PEOPLE as part of its 287g program, but can't figure out how to respond to my FOIA request about the 287g program itself. Makes sense.

How much does it cost to get information about a cop who punched someone in the face?

About $2.5M, plus 44,816 hours of staff time, according to the Eugene, OR, Police Department.

If that sounds absurd, it’s because it is.

"For small newsrooms, a $2.5 million invoice is effectively a gag order that was never actually about covering costs, but bullying the requester to drop their inquiry," FPF's @laurenleharper.bsky.social writes in @theintercept.com

I guess this explains why DOJ never found any of her emails in response to my FOIAs...even though they specifically asked for any and all of Bondi's DOJ email addresses. 😡 awesome stuff from @jasonleopold.bsky.social

@laurenleharper.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:06 PM

oh good.

Cop is subject of community complaints (including for punching a driver in the face during a traffic stop).

Local newsroom files a public records request about him.

Eugene, Ore says sure thing, that’ll cost $2.5 million and take at least 44,000 hours to complete.

Our first case, in November, 2025, was on behalf of @laurenleharper.bsky.social at @freedom.press for records of how ICE tried to completely shut members of Congress out of its facilities for oversight visits. Still ongoing! freedom.press/the-classifi...

If you guessed anything lower than $2.5 million, you’d be wrong — at least according to the city of Eugene, Oregon."

The legal rationale behind killing people shouldn't be a secret. This FOIA ruling is a step in the right direction - but hurdles remain.
