The neat thing is that after this, @friedmanlab.bsky.social led the description of the fish as a new genus, and commissioned @bobnichollsart.bsky.social for one of the first complete reconstructions of how this giant suspension feeder might have looked.

A green pac-man looking headed fish swimming through dark blue water, mouth agape. There are plesiosaurs and Baculites in the background.

One of the best bits of being a palaeobiologist is attempting to visualize our weird and wonderful creatures so here is a digital painting of my post-mortem reconstruction of #Edrathina next to the 🐔 #Haootia reconstruction of @bobnichollsart.bsky.social
if you want to read about them free then…

Artistic impression of a collapsed Ediacaran Edrathina showing iridescent collapsed conical calyx and numerous pinnate tentacles. lying on a patchy white microbial mat. lit by imagined diving light. Absolutely! He even does ASMR (before ASMR was a thing) when he searches the murder site in The Resident Patient.

@bobnichollsart.bsky.socialSep 17, 2026, 1:48 PM

Indeed! An even more impressive feat of strength!

Cheers, thank you.

#FossilFriday: the displaced vertebrae at the base of the unexpectedly long neck of the Plesiosaurus discovered by Mary Anning in 1823 which caused some discussion at the time, and Henry De la Beche's fun interpretation of how the bones came to be displaced in his 1829-31 lithograph Duria antiquior.

Left, photograph of the long neck of a plesiosaur skeleton with a scatter of vertebrae (circled) at the base of the neck; right detail from an 1830 reconstruction of a plesiosaur with its neck being bitten by a large ichthyosaur.
