Four smiling young adults pose in front of a blue "ocean PAVILION" backdrop. On the left, a man in a black suit and a woman in a dark blazer shake hands with the two people on the right: a person wearing glasses and a dark green shirt, and a man wearing a light blue dress shirt.A medium shot shows a smiling young man with short brown hair and a beard standing at a wooden table in a spacious lab or workshop, looking at the camera. He is wearing a dark grey, long-sleeved athletic shirt.

In front of him on the table are several items:
- A tall, narrow, rectangular container made of clear acrylic, partially filled with a translucent, light-orange liquid.
- A small, white cardboard box with a colorful circular logo that reads "LED STRIP LIGHTS," with a small black camera lens sitting on top of it.
- An open black laptop displaying a dark screen with software interface elements.

In the background, the room is brightly lit with high ceilings. Two other people are visible but slightly out of focus: a person with dark hair and glasses sitting behind the laptop, and another person on the right facing away from the camera. A bright yellow structure is visible in the middle background. An eye-level medium-shot captures two people on a gray inflatable boat in glacial water. On the left, a person sits facing slightly right, looking ahead. They wear a gray beanie with the word "MITWHOI" in blue letters, an orange and black jacket, and red and black gloves. They hold a small yellow device up to their left eye. A yellow notebook lies open next to their lap. In the center, a person in a green and black jumpsuit and a bright teal beanie with black sunglasses resting on top sits facing right, holding a black camera to their face as if taking a photo.

They are in a calm, light teal body of water with small ice chunks floating. The water reflects the cloudy, white sky and the mountains in the background. High, jagged mountains line both sides of the water, with patches of snow on them. On the far right is a glacier that extends into the water. An eye-level shot captures two smiling female researchers on a ship’s deck collecting water samples from a CTD rosette.

On the left, a researcher wearing a blue hard hat with a "NES-LTER" sticker, a black fleece, grey trousers, and brown tall boots squats down. She holds a small, clear sample bottle with a red cap under a tube releasing water from one of several large grey Niskin bottles on the CTD frame.

Squatting next to her on the right, the other researcher, with blonde hair in a bun, wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, and red shoes, looks on with a smile. She wears purple protective gloves.

The background shows the ship's white superstructure, a blue metal barrier on the right, and the wet, white deck.

🌊 The GO-BGC @globaloceanbgc.bsky.social project nears its end on Oct. 31 when 500 @bgc-argo.bsky.social floats with chemical and biological sensors for ocean health will have been deployed. The array will then begin to decline as there is no future funding to replace floats as batteries are 1/2

7. The US has led on global climate science and preparedness but is throwing that lead away.

Reminder for those of us who leave things to the last minute - last day to respond to the NSF request for input on ocean observing 🌊 GO-BGC funding is crucial for us to keep putting floats in the water, and for me to keep putting Lego floats in my office!

Meet the crowned sea cucumber, one of the deep ocean's clean-up champs 🗑️💫

These squishy sea cucumbers, Peniagone spp., are abundant on expansive abyssal plains. They march across the mud on stocky tube feet. They keep their head down, focused on feeding.

El Niño is building in the Pacific, and our BGC-Argo floats are watching. As warm water cuts off the nutrient supply, phytoplankton shift deeper to find what they need to grow, particulate carbon drops, and there's less biomass to feed the rest of the food web. 🌊

NSF has funded over 80% of the world's BGC-Argo floats via GO-BGC, which ends in October 2026, so the global array will start shrinking. NSF is asking US researchers to weigh in on future ocean observing priorities: www.go-bgc.org/nsf/nsf-requ...

Once the world’s largest iceberg, A23a is giving scientists a front-row seat to a changing Antarctic environment from space.

Using satellite imagery, WHOI researchers are tracking the trillion-ton iceberg as it melts and drifts through the Southern Ocean.
