No need to insult Homer’s grammar over a perfectly good plural! The word octopus comes from the Greek oktōpous, meaning “eight-footed,” and entered English through Latinized scientific terminology. Since octopus is fully established in English, the standard plural octopuses is perfectly correct. 🐙

Unlocking new ways to understand ocean life through eDNA 🧬

Researchers from around the world will gather in Seattle on October 28–30 for the 2026 Global eDNA Conference to explore the latest science, technologies, and applications of environmental DNA.

Arms up if you love octopuses! 🐙🙋 #WorldOctopusDay

Deep-sea organisms use a variety of ways to swim. Most cephalopods, like this gliding Benthoctopus sp., have the ability to move by jet propulsion. This one was observed pulsing its arms and jetting gracefully through the water.

THIS!! 😆👏

That moment when you spot a deep-sea cutie 😍 Deep-sea hatchetfishes in the family Sternoptychidae cleverly camouflage themselves in the dark depths of the ocean with light-producing organs along their bellies. This counterillumination allows them to hide from predators that may be lurking below.

MBARI has named marine ecologist Lisa Levin the 2026 David Packard Distinguished Lecturer, recognizing her contributions to seafloor ecology and deep-sea science and policy.

A resident of rocky environments, the mushroom soft coral offers a safe haven for small animals seeking protection. A snailfish may hide near the umbrellas of stinging tentacles. A shrimp might hang on to weather the storm of strong currents.

A neighborly sort of coral 🪸💕 The mushroom soft coral (Heteropolypus ritteri) is one of the most common animals we see in the depths off the central coast of California. They are abundant on the jagged walls of Monterey Canyon and the rocky slopes of local seamounts.

3 continuous years of acoustic vector sensing enables large-scale assessment of blue and fin whales' use of pelagic habitats. Stronger upwelling expands blue whale foraging habitat, increasing overlap with fin whales and shipping vessels. Led by John Ryan @mbarinews.bsky.social

Sightings of Physetocaris are exceedingly uncommon. MBARI researchers have spotted this shrimp just four times in nearly four decades of ocean exploration.

This little shrimp has mastered the art of disappearing in the deep 😶‍🌫️ Physetocaris microphthalma can hide in plain sight. A transparent body with splashes of red is clever camouflage—red wavelengths disappear in these black waters, leaving this shrimp nearly invisible to predators.

We're not really sure! That's why deep-sea research is so important. We need to learn more about these habitats, how human impacts affect them, and how those impacts affect the organisms living on the deep seafloor.

El Niño is building in the Pacific, and our BGC-Argo floats are watching. As warm water cuts off the nutrient supply, phytoplankton shift deeper to find what they need to grow, particulate carbon drops, and there's less biomass to feed the rest of the food web. 🌊
