Did Ukrainian drone strikes really silence Russia's social media bots? (No) A real Cloudflare chart fueled a viral story ab MAGA and AfD accounts going quiet. But the evidence doesn't support the rumor. I wrote about bots, vibes, & what we've lost as platforms have shut down tools & data access.

I reposted a claim about bot activity on X which I wanted to believe. Now reposting the correction which is not as fun, but the required penance for being wrong.

So there currently a raging debate on X, Bluesky & other platforms where people are using a drop in Cloudflare's YandexBot traffic to claim that right-wing online engagement is falling. radar.cloudflare.com/bots/as13238...
That conclusion doesn't follow from the data.

So I was forced to blog about it:

aamtest: Testing accessibility in WPT
blogs.igalia.com/mrego/aamtes...

This blog post covers the work @igalia.com has been doing to add a new type of tests in WPT, which allow testing the platform accessibility APIs directly.

Thanks to NLnet Foundation for sponsoring this work.

I’ve spent the better part of the last 2 years both using coding models and trying to help these models deliver higher quality code and I honestly could not agree more with Zach here… www.zachleat.com/web/ai-websi...

The "no steps back" is, in my opinion, what sets atproto apart from everything that came before it. I use it too for much of my work in browsers too, under a different name: user behavior / developer backwards compatibility. It comes at a massive cost, but I think is a powerful guiding principle.

@foolip.orgOct 8, 2026, 7:28 PM

Importantly, it's not a blanket "don't change anything" but based on the actual measured usage. That makes all the difference and avoids being paralyzed by the mere possibility of breakage. Successfully changing parts of the platform that are already in use is incredibly satisfying 😀

@foolip.orgOct 8, 2026, 7:21 PM

In browser engines and web standards, we might say "don't break the web" but also compatibility, site compat, or backwards compat.

And it's something that's been formalized in Blink's launch process, with a lot of detailed examples in docs.google.com/document/d/1... by @rbyers.net.

Remember Internet Explorer’s “Page Transitions”?

Well, they’re back, thanks to the View Transition API!

The project leverages IE’s meta tags so browser support is not limited to Modern Browsers™ but also includes IE 5.5–8.0 😆

Today marks three years since the terrorist attacks of 7 October in Israel. We honour the victims and stand with the families who still carry the heavy weight of grief. We remember the young lives cut short at a music festival. And the long ordeal of the hostages.

You don't have to think JPEG XL is the best format, or plan to use it, to understand that we all benefit when browser vendors are responsive to developer feedback. I'm sorry it took this long in Chromium, and while I'm unlikely to use this format in my own work, I'm happy we're adding options.

@foolip.orgOct 6, 2026, 7:09 PM

JPEG XL shipped in Chrome 155 today, try it out!

Huge kudos to Luca and team for getting this done. Image codecs are cool in so many levels, and I'm super impressed by the people who make that magic happen.
