After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

In other professors’ syllabi, the bot flagged the Pulitzer Prize–winning play Angels in America by Tony Kushner, essays by the Mexican American MacArthur genius grant recipient Sandra Cisneros, and materials related to a class about the Holocaust (that professor was told to drop material regarding Nazi persecution of LGBTQ people).

Putting aside the ideological slant of the new rules, the bot, like many large language models, seems to “hallucinate,” or make mistakes. The AAUP lawsuit lists texts banned for their “sex-based ecofeminist framework” and “gendered ecofeminist frameworks.” These phrases might sound persuasively like academese, but the academics behind the lawsuit had never heard of them; these concepts “do not exist,” the complaint says. Matthew Pehl, a history professor at Tech, told me that he knew several people who’d received reports from the system that were “plainly written by an AI that had hallucinated content or confused content from one class to another.”

Many supposed news organizations are launching weird AI and tech products that fundamentally break the rules of journalism. Any interview is an individual conversation with its own terms between a source and reporter.

Trump’s new AI website is kinda fun, it turns out.

Can the president use taxpayer funds to air his old campaign ads on TV?

No. Federal appropriations law has long barred using taxpayer funds for political advertising.

An update on this story:

Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin said this in our request for comment on @ramirez.house.gov's plans:

"Radical leftists are calling to defund the police and abolish DHS. It’s NEVER going to happen.”

This fascinating, grim and utterly necessary story from my old chums at Tech Review: zillions spent on high-tech US border surveillance and yet thousands of people still dying within a stone’s throw of towers. A horrible reminder of how the promises of a technology often fail.

Days after we published our story on deaths by border towers, Rep Delia Ramirez announced a plan to terminate CBP's surveillance tower program—and dismantle DHS.

Citing our reporting, she said: "The towers that we have paid a billion $ to just don’t work.”

This vital and devastating investigation by my brilliant colleagues @eileenguo.bsky.social and @jamesmodonnell.bsky.social is an absolute must-read. The US spent billions on border surveillance. Why can't it catch people before they die? www.technologyreview.com/2026/09/21/1...

Our reporters spent the past year and some months investigating deaths along the "virtual wall" of the southern border. Their investigation reveals that a humanitarian crisis at the border has unfolded in view of the government’s own cameras:

If surveillance at the US-Mexico border is so all-seeing, why isn't it saving lives? @technologyreview.com and the Times of San Diego used EFF's map of border tech to conduct this first-of-its-kind analysis of the relationship between surveillance and migrant deaths.

(Graphic info warning) Graciela not only died on camera, but her body was then eaten by animals on camera. And this is not an isolated case.
