2/2 To see what an innovative approach to international cooperation could involve, it is helpful to divide Britain’s partnerships into three broad concentric circles of engagement.

1/3 Britain needs a new way to strengthen itself against coercion, rebuild international influence and regain domestic support.

It can do so by positioning itself as an innovator in international cooperation, writes @anthonydworkin.bsky.social.

For many Europeans, the challenge is not whether solutions exist, but whether political systems can deliver them in time. How can Europe preserve the benefits of consensus and democratic decision-making while becoming more responsive in a rapidly changing world? 👇️

4/4 The main takeaway: Europe should treat biomanufacturing as a strategic priority.

That means faster regulation, more scale-up capacity, patient capital and stronger links between science and industry.

3/4 Europe still has major strengths, including world-class research, strong industry and scale-up capacity. But slow regulation and fragmented policymaking make it harder for European companies to grow at home.

@ecfrpower.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 10:00 AM

2/4 China’s advantage is not only scale. It is connecting the whole chain: research, regulation, infrastructure, manufacturing and customers, making it easier to move from the lab to the market. For Europe, the risk is clear: innovative companies may end up relying on Chinese infrastructure.

@ecfrpower.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 10:00 AM

1/4 Biomanufacturing is not just another niche technology.

It is a new way of making everything from food and chemicals to materials and fuels, with the potential to reshape industry and energy security.

That is why China has made it a strategic priority. A 🧵

Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, pro-European candidates may find unexpected opportunities among voters of both the radical left and the far right, writes @pawelzerka.bsky.social

4/4 The broader lesson: Europe has to combine trade policy, industrial policy and economic security. It can negotiate specific disputes with Beijing, but threats of retaliation should not determine the rules under which Chinese firms sell, invest and operate in Europe.

@ecfrpower.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:01 PM

3/4 The second and third tests are where China produces and what it controls. Chinese investment should create real industrial value in Europe, not just assembly plants. And in critical infrastructure, Europe needs clear rules on where dependence on high-risk suppliers becomes a security problem.

@ecfrpower.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:01 PM

2/4 The first test is what China sells. Any trade deal must not stop Europe from tackling distortions elsewhere. A settlement on electric vehicles, for example, cannot mean tolerating unfair competition in batteries, chemicals, robotics or other sectors.

@ecfrpower.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:01 PM

1/4 Europe faces a difficult China dilemma: how to protect its economy and security without triggering uncontrolled escalation, writes @tobiasgehrke.bsky.social.

We argue for “stable decoupling”, defending Europe’s rules while keeping room for negotiation with Beijing. 🧵

Good on the SPD, good on Boris Pistorius, for this defiant refusal to cede the territory of national pride to the far-right - on the day an AfD politician became the president of a state parliament for the first time.
