Putin wants to make politicians out of Ukraine war veterans. After the recent election, 60 now sit in the Duma. But voters seem less keen than the official vote share suggests, and that could become a problem for the Kremlin, writes @kominmo.bsky.social

Great thread by Vincent on what may help explain the party’s breakthrough last month. Looking across Berlin’s 1,500 precincts, a higher share of households renting was weakly associated with higher support for Die Linke in 2023. By 2026, that relationship had become markedly stronger. (1/3) 🧵

Good on the SPD, good on Boris Pistorius, for this defiant refusal to cede the territory of national pride to the far-right - on the day an AfD politician became the president of a state parliament for the first time.

This is not the “old Israel” and Europeans need to reckon with that reality. Its liberal forces have weakened while its ultra-nationalist ones are ascendant. These shifts will endure far beyond Netanyahu. @ecfrmena.bsky.social

This is a big deal. Hanning led German foreign intelligence ("C" in UK system) 1998-2005 and was state secretary in the interior ministry.

The key question --> how secure are the intelligence services of a country (🇩🇪) that is becoming Europe's preeminent military power?

Our - with @kadriliik.bsky.social report on #Russia and its society is out. #Europe is seen more negatively than the #US, but there's a concern about #China. Few expect Putin's war against #Ukraine to end - but they also seem to have forgotten why Russia started it in the first place. /1

Also in 2027: the Dutch Senate is elected through an indirect electoral system. Under a minority government, the composition of the Senate partly determines the government’s room for manoeuvre and the balance of power within it.

With that, Europe's "super election year" starts early. To come in 2027: French presidential & legislative elections plus general elections in Estonia, Finland, Greece, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and major state elections in Germany. Roughly 6 in 10 EU voters at polls in a span of c.12 months.

EU super election year - with elections scheduled in France, Poland, Italy, Spain plus more equalling about a third of the EU - has been moved forward and is now starting in November 2026:

Sánchez calls elections for November 29. Odds strongly against him but history suggests it would be unwise to write off the great survivor of Spanish politics entirely. The timing is typically canny: seizing moment where the national conversation has turned from migration to housing.
