You do realise that the Americans fought Britain to become independent. And then decided to continue calling their language English! So, thanks for making our point. 😀

Completely agree. But logic and good sense went out of the window on this 35 years ago. I once remember talking about this to a well-respected Croatian academic. He was indignant that I could have suggested they all should have just stuck to Serbo-Croat. In his view, why shouldn’t it be Croato-Serb!

Is Europe getting its act together to decrease its dependence on the United States?

No. In fact, our leaders are only increasing our dependence – for instance on the subject of energy.

But there's some hope. Watch today's conversation with @jameskerlindsay.bsky.social:

Europe has talked a lot about building its independent defence and security capabilities since Trump returned to power. But what exactly has it actually done about it? As always, it was brilliant discussing all this with @davekeating.substack.com youtu.be/Q_AfRGUO9F8

Want to know what happened at last week’s gathering of world leaders at the UN General Assembly in New York? Here’s my quick round up.

So much for Russian power! (And don’t get me started on his stunning lack of understanding about the sanctions imposed on Russia.) Really, it astounds me how many people hold him up as some sort of guru on world affairs.

#India is an increasingly important actor in world affairs. But what does it really want from the international order? It was great talking @tanvimadan.bsky.social from @brookings.edu about the evolution of its foreign policy and where it stands on current global issues.

Utterly, utterly immoral individual.

@jameskerlindsay.bsky.socialSep 13, 2026, 6:45 PM

Yes, a definite improvement. The first part of the season was rather slow. (I felt the same with season 2.) A lot was explained.

@jameskerlindsay.bsky.socialSep 12, 2026, 1:05 PM

Enough. Do something something about this. Protecting Labour’s union support simply isn’t worth the damage done to the UK by these crypto billionaires funding the far-right with such huge amounts. Individual donations must be capped. And certainly no corporate, non-resident, or foreign donations.

@jameskerlindsay.bsky.socialSep 10, 2026, 4:45 PM

Thank you so much, Brian. It was really great talking to you.

Enjoyed my discussion with @jameskerlindsay.bsky.social about the relationship between the United States and international law. Have a watch/listen.

@jameskerlindsay.bsky.socialSep 10, 2026, 6:02 AM

The United States has always had a seemingly complex relationship with international law. But the Trump Administration has abandoned it completely. Do they realise what they’re doing? And can the damage ever be fixed? It was great to talk @bcfinucane.bsky.social about all this

Great points. I can see the danger for the CDU. As the Conservatives have found in the UK, if you adopt farright policies, moderate voters turn against you, and the rest just drift to the real far right parties. But the coalition point adds an important extra dimension. Tough place for Merz.

@jameskerlindsay.bsky.socialSep 3, 2026, 10:16 AM

Do sanctions ever actually work? Certainly, many are sceptical. But is this view misplaced? It was great to speak @drclaraportela.bsky.social about the rise of sanctions as a tool of international politics, how they function, and their future in an increasingly multipolar world. youtu.be/IdXnbvvX0bY

Excellent analysis here by @jameskerlindsay.bsky.social on Canada's pivot towards Europe, including a frank assessment of some of the very real challenges in doing this.

It was a real pleasure talking to @jameskerlindsay.bsky.social about the rise & fall of the British Empire:

@jameskerlindsay.bsky.socialAug 27, 2026, 8:15 AM

Just how should we understand the British Empire? It was brilliant talking to @alanlester.bsky.social about the history of Britain’s colonialism, and the complexities of reconciling liberalism and anti-slavery at home with a global project mired in racism and exploitation.
