apart from the known standard model of novels, novellas, and novellettes, we are yet to find evidence of the hypothesized novelino, noveletto, noveluccio, noveluzzo, or noveluolo. a great deal of work remains to be done
Ted Chiang's fav writing quote is from her essay 'Write till you drop' "There is something you find interesting, for a reason hard to explain. It is hard to explain because you have never read it on any page; there you begin. You were made and set here to give voice to this, your own astonishment."
Thank you so much, Liz! ☺️ And thank you for sharing this piece, it is indeed chilling
She would be sad if she knew what I’d given up for her. I don’t want her to know. Only at night do I pull my hair back and look. On the left side of my head, there is only a smooth stretch of skin, as though nothing were ever there at all.
Her coughs clear, no longer thick with mucus. Her childlike eyes focus on me, like I am the center of her whole world. Softly, dryly, she croaks out my name. Now I wear my hair loose over my shoulders, soft wisps framing my face, to conceal what I’ve done.
I ask him if he takes cash, Venmo, CashApp. No, he says. All he wants is an ear. I only say yes because at this point, I’m willing to try anything. Over the next few days, I’m almost surprised when my purchase works. My sister’s breathing deepens, no longer shallow and quick.
For the price of an ear, I buy my sister's life.
A small price to pay, the trader says, smiling his wolfish smile.
I have no way to know if he can actually do what he claims he can.
He's a strange man with no business card, no company name, no website or social media presence.
I read "Missing Helen" by @tiatashiro.bsky.social this week for Feeding the Muse, and, wow. What a delicious premise: a woman whose husband runs away with her own younger clone.
Highly recommend this one 🥹
PSA turns out the fastest way to write a short story is by using it to procrastinate on writing a novel
Public voting is open for the Ignyte Awards!! I'm on the ballot for the first time, for my short story "The Octopus Dreams of Personhood" 🐙 There are tons of other incredible nominees here 🥹 would highly recommend reading + voting!
