One thing I forgot to mention when we reviewed Mando and Grogu was how irked I was that they were using playing cards for wanted Imperials like Bush Jr. did in Iraq 2. I think comparing the New Republic's Nazi hunt to an illegal, botched invasion is bad form.

But most importantly, chiaroscuro was used to great effect in early episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series.

And, of course, chiaroscuro was embraced by Film Noir.

The style became popular in 20th century comic books where the color pallet was limited and shadows could only be depicted as black.

A Case of Chiaroscuro (Key-ah-roh-skoo-roh) takes it's name from the Italian term for high contrast light and dark. The Baroque art movement of the 17th century popularized the term. Artists included Caravaggio, Gentileschi, Velazquez, and Rembrandt.
