Great that some of the TransLucent team met with NION women at the Greens conference over the weekend. The event was a huge success and will likely relocate to a larger space next year. A huge "thank you" to the Greens and LGBT Foundation for organising.

My GP recommends swimming for my back. I want to go. There are 2 communal changing rooms. Labour say I should use the mens. I am a visibly female woman with a GRC. If I use the mens there's a serious risk of me being confronted and worse. So where do I go? I don't. I'm segregated from society.

Amazing news

The Supreme Court has responded to the complaint we have raised alongside @translucent.org.uk and @transparentaction.bsky.social and, as expected, they have failed to address the concerns we have raised...

"Dear Trans Advocacy & Complaints Collective, Transparent Action, and
TransLucent
Thank you for your complaint about the Court's new exhibition. I understand
your concern to be that the presentation of For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish
Ministers appears to be weighted towards the perspective of those who
campaigned for and celebrated the outcome, while giving insufficient
recognition to those who opposed it. You have confirmed that you are not
challenging the judgment itself or the inclusion of the case in the exhibition.
As Head of External Affairs and Communications, with responsibility for the
exhibition, I have been asked to respond to the matters you have raised. It may
be helpful first to explain the exhibition's purpose and approach.
The Law and Us features 70 appeals heard by the Supreme Court, the Judicial
Committee of the Privy Council and the Appellate Committee of the House of
Lords, the predecessor to the Supreme Court. The cases cover a wide range of
legal issues and were selected to illustrate both the breadth of the Court's work
and the ways in which the law affects people's lives. The exhibition also explains
the creation of the Court, the development of law in the UK and the role of the
Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers is one of the 70 featured appeals.
As with the other case studies, it explains the background to the dispute, the""legal questions considered, the Justices' decision and a subsequent reflection
from a Justice or another person connected with the law. Images relating to the
appeal or its wider context were selected to help visitors understand the issues.
...You suggest that the headline, "When the law says 'woman', what does it mean?"
could imply that the Court went further than the judgment itself. The headline
refers expressly to the meaning of terms used in law. The question before the
Court concerned the meaning of "woman" and "sex" in a specific piece of
legislation. This is made clear in the case study under the paragraph heading
"The heart of the case". The display does not suggest that the Court provided a
general definition outside of the legislation it was considering.
Regarding your concerns about the images used - which you say "reflects the
perspective of those who celebrated the judgment" while largely ignoring those who
did not - the display features an image of the Scottish Government alongside that
of For Women Scotland, thus representing both parties in the appeal. This is
consistent with the approach taken across the exhibition. Their purpose is to
illustrate the case and its context, rather than to represent every individual or
organisation with an interest in the wider debate. The inclusion of any image
does not signify the Court's endorsement of any person or organisation
depicted. We did not visually represent the interveners; however, details of them
as well as the judgment, are available on the Court's website, along with the
recordings of the hearing and written_legalarguments.
Lady Rose's contribution is a personal reflection on the atmosphere in
Courtroom 1 when the judgment was handed down. It does not endorse a
particular position or present the outcome as a cause for celebration. The
exhibition also states that, when handing down the judgment, the Court
emphasised that trans people remain protected from discrimination under the
Equality Act 2010..""private room, and seats were not allocated according to the position an
individual supported in either case.
I have carefully considered the matters you have raised, examining the wording,
images, personal reflection and contextual material in the exhibition. I am
satisfied that the display accurately explains the issue before the Court, the
judgment and its legal context, and is consistent with the approach taken across
the exhibition. I am also satisfied that the arrangements for members of the
public who attended the judgment hand-down were professional, impartial and
transparent.
If you are dissatisfied with the handling or outcome of your complaint, you may
request a review within 14 days in accordance with the Administrative
Complaints Policy, details of which are available on the Court's website.
Yours sincerely
Bom Mema

Head of External Affairs & Communications

TransLucent will be at the Birdcage tomorrow (BN2 1TL) from 0930 to 1130 at the Lib Dem Autumn Conference, informing delegates about trans rights, or, to be precise, the lack of them.

A huge thanks to Lib Dems LGBT and LGBT Foundation for the invite.

Our code of practice for services, public functions and associations comes into force today. It provides practical guidance on how the Equality Act 2010 applies to services, public functions and associations. Find out more: https://ow.ly/alIf50Zwrkx

Quote from Dr Mary-Ann Stephenson: 'At the EHRC we want a society where everyone’s rights are respected and realised, so that we can all live well together. Our statutory guidance will help services across the country comply with the Equality Act, protecting service users from discrimination and harassment while reducing the risk of the provider being subject to litigation.

As Britain’s equality regulator, our work doesn’t end upon publication of this guidance. We monitor compliance with the law and take enforcement action where proportionate and necessary, in line with our well-established regulatory model and decision-making framework.'

Emily has been treated disgracefully by the Labour Party for a while. I wrote about how they sabotaged her standing in the general election. They would rather have another Conservative than a trans person in parliament.
