sadly, apparently (many!) people in the punditry have trouble with sustained critical thinking.... thank you both for continuing the work.

New @nejm.org Voices: how I write an introduction to a research manuscript

“My first piece of advice…: write your introduction backwards.

“My second piece of advice: innovate in your ideas, not in the structure of how you present the ideas.”

NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted.

I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

thecut.comThe Reason Why Colleges Still Fail to Address Sexual ViolenceThe “Cornell Seven” case highlights what’s wrong with Trump’s Title IX rules — and how the system was always designed to fail.

ICE took two more people from my local courthouse today. The wife of one of the guys who was taken showed up shortly after. She just had surgery. She was worried about paying rent and feeding her kids. This is happening *every day* in Massachusetts. Lives are being destroyed every single day.

“The transcript of a Nov. 14 interview she gave also contained more definitive language that the police omitted from her statement: ‘I can say with 100 percent confidence I was raped.’” This is enraging and unacceptable.

A 24 year old farm worker was killed by heat in Mississippi. No worker should be killed on the job, but we still have no enforceable federal heat protection rules. 1/

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

Measles doesn't stop harming people when the rash goes away. Measles can damage the immune system, causing "immune amnesia" for up to five years.

Measles outbreaks this year and last could leave thousands vulnerable to other infectious diseases.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

nytimes.comNational Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress (Gift Article)The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

So grateful to @jcollins.bsky.social for this interview. It was an especially raw conversation, coming just a day after I learned that Maurice had died.

This is slightly out of my normal lane, and I could charge six (hell maybe seven) figure to deliver this message as a consultant, but I’m gonna do it for free. Because I’m ✨enraged✨ People in the think tank/policy/inside the beltway DC world have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE how mad people are abt Cornell. 🧵

Another person has died in Trump's concentration camps. 47-year-old Julian Curo-Churata was from Peru. He died on Sept. 29 after he was imprisoned for three months in Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana. That camp is run by LaSalle Corrections. There's no cause of death listed.

maybe not only about the science. controlling science has many different cascading impacts that suit the agenda.

@dangaristo.bsky.socialOct 1, 2026, 5:07 PMReposted by @drtomori.bsky.social

To be more direct about it: OMB's budget-level cuts to science are not really about science. It can be very difficult for people (especially scientists) who are harmed by these cuts to grasp that science is really just collateral damage.
