Collins "decried the 'gutter-level political campaign' waged against Kavanaugh by 'dark money' and 'special-interest groups' (groups that presumably included Planned Parenthood, the organization that had last given her an award just the previous year), portraying Kavanaugh as the real victim."

One of the dynamics of the Maine senate debates is how deftly Jackson is baiting Collins to go headfirst into affronted victimhood mode. Her incredibly thin skin is something I wrote about in my profile of her in 2020:

Adding the link for you. On a reread, you may find that it’s about Troy Jackson being a pretty great candidate, whose DC campaign stewards didn’t seem to have much confidence in. Thanks for thinking of it! nymag.com/intelligence...

Lord, please let Troy Jackson survive his close proximity to The Consultants

Another source familiar with the campaign said, “I don’t even think it’s disdain for Maine so much as it’s just disdain for, more generally, people. They want to run this campaign through numbers and spreadsheets. And wherever a campaign is connecting with people or doing anything quirky or unique, they’re like, ‘This is bad and weird.’”

Like, c'mon people. Nothing in @rtraister.bsky.social's piece suggests anyone shouldn't support @troyjackson207.bsky.social for Senate in Maine. Stop trying to make a scandal where there isn't one.

@rtraister.bsky.social’s reporting in @nymag.com makes it clear Jackson didn’t “emerge from nowhere.”
His long history in state politics and the relationships she describes are why he was able to become the candidate.
The fact that DC & NY editors had never heard of him doesn’t mean Mainers hadn’t.

"Steinem could always care enough to cry in part because she always believed that human beings not only should — but really might — be better than they often are." I loved reading this piece on Gloria Steinem by @rtraister.bsky.social. www.thecut.com/article/glor...

"In Maine, the people being hunted, rounded up, and separated from their families by ICE, in addition to being sisters, brothers, and parents of toddlers in Bluey pajamas, are workers"

This is such an excellent piece by @sarahjones.bsky.social and pairs pretty well (I think) with one I published yesterday on a mainstream preoccupation with the performance of class, but not the expression of true horror at the rounding up and killing of human beings:

I wrote about my mother’s family, their lives of working poverty on the coast of Maine, and the truly bizarre and detached conversations our pundits are having about Platner and working-class America nymag.com/intelligence...

nymag.comWhat Does It Mean to Be a Working-Class Candidate?Graham Platner’s campaign was fatally flawed. Its message is still worth examining.

Perfect day and perfect venue to publish a column in which I publicly acknowledge that I liked Graham Platner, correct? nymag.com/intelligence...
