Heading to the Durham Book Festival today to hear Susanna Clarke talk about her new book The Bishop of Durham Attempts to Surrender the City. Piranesi was one of my favourite novels of recent years and I loved Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

I have a soft spot for A Modest Proposal which was one of my undergrad dissertation poems. Wind is well realised and deservedly routinely anthologised. October Dawn has a lovely snappy last line and the sudden prehistoric creatures are a delight.

I reread Ted Hughes's debut The Hawk in the Rain recently. It is frontloaded with startling classics, the title poem, The Jaguar, The Thought-Fox, & The Horses that announced the arrival of a major new poet. The collection dips a bit in the middle & ends with emotive war poems.
