SHORT TALK ON ORCHIDS

We live by tunnelling for we are people buried alive. To me, the tunnels you make will seem strangely aimless, uprooted orchids. But the fragrance is undying. A Little Boy has run away from Amherst a few Days ago, writes Emily Dickinson in a letter of 1883, and when asked where he was going replied, Vermont or Asia.

happy #smallpoemsunday! 💜

feel free to share small poems you wrote or ones you love by other poets :)

here’s one by Charlie Zacks, from Who Will Find My Body @sandandgravelpress.bsky.social

KISS

Watching strangers kiss on the corner.
It’s a windy night.
Enough to ruin my hair.
I’m alone, but
I’m glad good things still happen.

HYDRA

They hung my blood from the branches
they cast my blood into the sea
the wildflowers the painted teeth the bitter
kisses
the fish the ships in the sea
all built their nests in my blood
and dyed their sails with my blood
and with my blood they flapped their wings
all the terrible birds in the sea

and here's one for @tomsnarsky.bsky.social's #smallpoemsunday #poetry

it’s always the sugar

someone's dog is always dying here
we put up with sadness like it's rain
bite another notch in the oakwood, then
a dentist counts our teeth and tells us
too! many! sweets! yeah —
it's always the sugar, the sugar, the sugar
they say ruins things. never the dead dogs.

Late

The dogs in the night
are quiet at last. They heard nothing
back from the dark. Tired, they’ve fallen
into the splintered sleep of the small
and the unanswered. Now that tapping
from the kitchen—a drip, maybe the clock.
Beyond the door the porch swing
that sways through the night, empty
in a wind, saying it all,
saying it all.

"A Poem That I Wrote in a High Fever"
Yehuda Amichai for #smallpoemsunday @tomsnarsky.bsky.social

You who are lengthening your lives
with the best doctors and the best medicines
remember those who are shortening their lives
with the wars
that you in your long lives are not
preventing.
You who are again screwing
the younger generations
and winking at each other
the winking of your eyelids
is like the chill of the swinging shutters
in an empty house.

Quarantine 9

How beautiful the spent annuals,
tied to their roots. The yard's dense mud.
The viral load, the unscrolled breath.
Clouds have come down to touch us.
They hang around; they will not leave.
We have enclosed the yard with strings of light.
In this way, we are kept company.
In this way, our company is kept.

For #SmallPoemSunday, @tomsnarsky.bsky.social, here's No Mention:

No Mention

I shall not be remembered on
my birthday. I shall lie on the floor
like all those times before, singing
with the hounds as they pass by.
My name forgotten but my song,
also forgotten. Even the floor
is gone.

Love Song in a Bad Time

after Brecht

Near strangers warned me against you.
Against each other, in the night,
a branch outside
was more friend to me.

We were happiest when we were not in each other’s presence.

In the Golden Arrow Motel I wrote some childlike agreements
and asked you to sign.
Every time you confessed something particularly demeaning
you tried to call it making love.

I’d already learned the art of observation.
My idea of action was to wait.
Near strangers warned me against you.

V
Write the way you want
Too much blood has gone under the bridge
To go on believing I believe
That you can only go one way.

In poetry everything is permitted.
The poet who sleeps on the sofa
Greets you with thunder and lightning.
