Bit of a break this weekend and starting by digging into @kkdumez.bsky.social essential new book. Read the intro a few weeks ago and have been holding on to this pocket of time. It’s sad, it’s enraging, it’s patriarchy. Also you learn where that perky LLL phrase originated.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.

What a book. Highly recommend, relevant then, relevant now.

I knew and appreciated it (and her work on race and regency!) before I got to know the wonderful @triciamatthew.bsky.social. I'm so sorry for the grief of this anniversary, but so grateful for both book and author.

I'll never understand how "a lot of mostly/potentially/probably incorrect metadata is better for digital discovery than accurate but sparse metadata" became a popular idea than "we will put things online more slowly, but we will do it with accuracy"

I really need to stop writing my last book. But it would help if there were fewer contemporary politicos with as much confidence and just about as much sense as Blackstone about patriarchy.

Historians know how important it is to understand the particulars and also how important it is not to let the larger context go unexamined. Historically, violence against women is not an eppidemic, it's endemic. //

I can't summon the vocabulary for the last (week? months? years?) of emotional regulation required on this topic. I can't say I don't have *any* friends who never experienced SA, but most have. Mine was at 13-- or the worst, anyway. As a historian, my point is that college SA is in a context.

Contrary to billing change over time as our beat, as a historian I'm here to tell you that violence against women is an absolute constant. Not generations but centuries of activism & policies have made that violence only somewhat more public. Our daily news reminds us how and why.
