New video: I answer a bunch of questions for 30 minutes.
From the new book, to challenges, and much more.

I know, I know. Paying for journalism of any kind might feel strange, but our labour is not a cheap commodity to be consumed freely. So, to reward those willing to support us from the outset, Vertical Slice is running a LIMITED-TIME LAUNCH SALE. Nab 33% off our monthly/yearly 'Supporter' sub.
Ofc it's on you to fix things if they go wrong, but with enough tinkering, you can get to a 'set and forget' place that's comforting. Most themes you buy come with support licenses, too. Crucially, I'm also not pulling mega-traffic on the regular (yet), which is why I can survive on a small droplet!
Nothing wrong with using Ghost, IMO, but I just wanted to be off-grid, lean and clean (paid for my fonts, so I don't rely on Adobe WebKit), all-free plugins, and I'm very particular about new ones. The third cost was the theme, but even that was like a 50 quid one time thing, I think.
Postmode.org is DIY-hosted with WordPress & a Cloudways droplet, and it was a pain in the arse to figure out at first (I was a total beginner to web dev and design, etc.), but I think it was worth it in the long run! Hosting is $13 a month, the domain was cheap, and I've licensed the fonts I use.
š HUGE CAREER ANNOUNCEMENT š
Today, I'm launching Vertical Slice, a new independent trade outlet committed to producing quality video game journalism that inspires, informs, and interrogates. That means daily news, incisive interviews, vital investigative work, and more.
The Hellraiser game has some jaw-dropping visual design, though I wish it were more like Amnesia than Resident Evil. A highly derivative, half-baked combat system makes the gamey elements clash heavily with the IP's identity.
šØ Are you an indie developer who's recently received Government funding for your game? I'd love to speak to you about your experience! My DM's are open, but also feel free to email me: š© thwaitesannsarah [at] gmail [dot] com Reposts appreciated!
Last word on this is that Biddy Blas is my new favourite Glup Shitto. Love that little guy.
It's apt, I think! The acts end with a 1v1; it reminded me so much of facing off against Ripper Roo haha

A reminder there's these Bluesky Starter Packs if you want to follow independent games media:

Continuing my Tokyo Game Show coverage with this interview about Dinolords, an RTS ARPG hybrid that imagines an alternate history where the Vikings found dinosaurs in Greenland and domesticated them in order to invade England.
When I left IGN/GN, I vowed to try to give as much work to as many people fresh out of publications as possible during these cuts - but even for a healthy business, the demand/need now is impossible. The future is independent, smaller, & reader-supported. Support the coverage you want to see!
On the topic of supporting independent games media, Postmode is independent and ad-free, and I'd like to keep it that way!

Games media cuts have felt unending for a while, but the mood feels especially grim among indie outlets with the latest wave of layoffs. More than ever, if the game industry values its media, it needs to support them. Buy some advertising, sponsor content, purchase subs. It makes a big difference.
Kind of cheating with The Orange Box but we are where we are
Here's how GamesRadar handled another answer from my interview as a news piece. Ideal, really. Not hard to do either. Just hit Command + K and paste in the link from the other tab you have open...
It's good that sites like GameRant are writing breakout news stories drawn from my reporting, but given that Postmode.org is independent and ad-free, would it kill you to drop the original source as a backlink? Literally an ideal hyperlink spot right there.
My Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve review is up!
Or as I like to call it: The Phantom Plane.
I bounced off Ace Combat 7, but this hooked me immediately: pristine controls & jaw-dropping missions ā it's a great entry point to Strangereal.
