Protamines sound super cool, because they are, they evolve, superfast, and are of the first examples of positive selection at the gene level!

Some thoughts on the CIHR Project survey. I am very concerned about panicked “do something” changes in the face of declining success rates and rising app pressure. The same thing that lead to several years of stepping on rakes during the “Reforms.”

More CIHR musings, because I think we don't actually know what's going on in important ways that might influence how we think about prospective solutions. These are questions CIHR could answer if it wanted to.

Here’s the especially depressing bit: “peer review reports and funding recommendations have “suddenly become much longer, more detailed and complex”. Colleagues, what are you doing?

@liisagalea.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 12:23 PM

It’s one of the worst things about peer review. This is why I love the concept of consolidated reviews (eNeuro) but in practice a lot of editors didn’t do it. It also required associate editors to READ all the manuscripts assigned to them. Which was also super helpful or should be in theory

@liisagalea.bsky.socialSep 28, 2026, 11:04 PM

The editor really should have identified the conflicting comments and triaged them for you. (& I’m sorry that completely sucks)
