The treatment of Russian émigré journalist Leonid Ragozin is symptomatic of an Orwellian turn in the West, where the defence of liberal democracy increasingly serves as cover for the suppression of unwelcome or inconvenient voices.

Monday’s Québec election offered one of the most egregious examples of first-past-the-post failure in modern Canadian history. We must be rid of this broken system, which gives far too much power with far too little of the vote, writes @christoaivalis.bsky.social.

Canada’s notwithstanding clause has become a ready-made cudgel for governments looking to bypass debate and Charter protections. As its use expands, so too does the need for stronger organized resistance to abuses of political power.

Across Canada, unregulated pregnancy centres pose as health or counselling services while spreading abortion disinformation, often through religious pressure and emotional manipulation. Why are these centres still allowed to operate without oversight?

The LNG industry is an economic loser for Canada that deepens our economy’s structural problems rather than resolving them. It’s also an active front in the private equity takeover of this country that Mark Carney is orchestrating, writes @nickgottlieb.bsky.social.

What a country builds with public money is a statement of what it values. We must build for those already living through fires, floods, and extreme weather—not for the balance sheets of companies unwilling to risk their own capital on a new pipeline.

As victims of Kamloops Residential School are once more victimized by professional deniers and masked white supremacists, remember this important corrective by @niigaanwewidam.bsky.social and @seancarleton.bsky.social

In short, there is no hoax, conspiracy, or “big lie.” Denialists’ focus on assigning blame for “grave errors” at Kamloops is a deceptive strategy and a distraction tactic. It draws attention away from the already-existing evidence of child death at Kamloops (51 according to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation), the recent government cuts to funding for searches to identify potential missing children and unmarked burials, and the rising number of additional confirmed deaths and exhumations as part of other residential school investigations taking place across the country—as called for by the TRC in its Calls to Action 71-76.

At the end of the day, the Canadian government's Campus Antisemitism and Student Experiences (CASE) study is propaganda politics laundered as legitimate social science by Canadian scholars. We break down all the methodological flaws in this work of professional malpractice 👇.

To make definitively broad generalizations grounded in a small, biased selection sample is an unacceptable error, yet this is something the authors of this report repeatedly do, such as when they assert, “95.7% said they had experienced or witnessed at least one instance of antisemitism over the previous 12 months” without providing a caveat such as “of those surveyed” or a strong note on the limitations of the report’s methodology. This finding of 95 percent has, predictably, been repeated ad nauseam in the media. In fact, the authors of the report have admitted that among the very small number of respondents who indicated Zionism was not important at all to them, 92 percent said their campus was safe and inclusive for Jewish students, a finding that directly contradicts the thesis that it is Jewishness, rather than the state policy of Israel, that is the object of critique on campuses.

The 95 and 92 percent figures, taken together, index a larger problem: the incentive for participants to articulate experiences that align with broader political projects in a moment of profound polarization. It is clear beyond doubt that students with Zionist proclivities reported discrimination and those with anti-Zionist leanings reported none. So, what the study seems to reveal above all is the political orientation of its participants. It is not really possible to falsify any of the findings beyond that. If Zionist students consider critique of Israel to be a form of harm, that is what they will report. But this is not an objective measure, as evinced by the testimony of anti-Zionist students.

Discourse on ‘antisemitism’ in Canada and the US has reached a fever pitch. But, when you dig into the substance of the claims, it becomes clear that what is really being denounced is critique of genocide and antizionism. The CASE report is a paradigmatic example.

A federal report on campus antisemitism makes sweeping claims from a self-selected, unweighted sample. It also repeatedly blurs the line between antisemitism and criticism of Israel, write @nkalamb.bsky.social, @derekcrim.bsky.social, @dansailofsky.bsky.social, and @privaricate.bsky.social.

Despite its lofty promises, the Carney government's AI strategy is unlikely to protect Canadian sovereignty or safeguard democracy. We need a model of technological development that moves beyond extractivism, resource colonialism, concentrated corporate power, and ecological sacrifice.
