Agreed, most investors would do due diligence here and it's probably more for making it seem legit when the CIB, etc., shell out billions to back the project. But he's also selling investors on the idea that the Canadian govt is all-in on this project, making it more appealing for them

Data centres are a solution for the US oil and gas industry's "we're out of oil and we have too much gas" problem, especially now that the Iran shock is destroying the growth prospects of their other solution, LNG exports

KKetan Joshi@ketanjoshi.coMay 28, 2026, 8:32 AM

JFC new IEA report shows: orders for fossil methane plants for data centres are bigger in the US than they for *any other country for any other reason* (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) "if data centres were a country, they would be the second-largest destination for gas turbines ordered from Q1 2025 to Q1 2026"

Note: it is common in the LNG industry for these kinds of HoAs to fail to produce signed SPAs 6/6 www.evainc.com/energy-blog/...

This agreement seems to be yet another non-announcement from the Carney govt designed to boost the attractiveness of Canada's #LNG industry for global investors.

It does not appear to indicate that #KsiLisimsLNG is any closer to FID than it was last week. 5/

It's hard to imagine that a German buyer would sign a long-term offtake agreement with KLLNG, and they may well not be able to reach agreeable terms. The Pacific-Atlantic arbitrage trade has only really made profitable sense (relative to shipping to Asia) during crises 4/

As SEFE puts it, this "agreement is contingent on the finalisation of a definitive Sales and Purchase Agreement between the two parties." This is, in other words, not yet an offtake agreement (distinct from KLLNG's earlier deals with Total and Shell). 3/

Canadian media credulously implied this was a sales and purchase or offtake agreement which would be a significant step in Ksi Lisims's troubled bid for a positive final investment decision. But the German buyer's press release clarifies that it is not. www.sefe.eu/en/media/new... 2/

Energy Minister Tim Hodgson announced the proposed #KsiLisimsLNG project had signed an agreement to export #LNG to Germany, the project's first sales agreement secured in 2 years and Canada's first to Europe.

But it isn't actually a sales agreement, it's a non-binding Heads of Agreement 1/

So the New York Times has, uh, a take on the whole RCP8.5 thing

A screenshot of the New York Times website with the headline "Why Scientists Retired the Dire Climate Scenario after a Decade" and the blurb "While global warming is still a threat, the decision to back away from a worst-case outlook raises questions about whether some risks have been overstated."
N@nickgottlieb.bsky.socialMay 24, 2026, 11:33 PM

I've wondered about this a lot. Is it actually that much worse now, or am I just that much more politically aware of what they're doing? The answer is probably some combination of both but hard to tell exactly to what degrees

N@nickgottlieb.bsky.socialMay 22, 2026, 2:35 AM

the "sovereign wealth fund" is called the Canada Strong Fund lol. we are governed by right wing think tanks

am I reading it too generously to think it's a nod to the fossil fuel industry's use of the word "molecules"?

I'm sorry, this is the @bcndpcaucus.bsky.social's billion dollar plan to reduce domestic energy consumption? It's 2026, give the people heat pumps for god's sake

A screenshot reading:

Helping people save every day

Power Smart 2.0 is designed to offer customers practical ways to save with minimal effort. An average customer in an electrically heated home, taking full advantage of available programs and offers, can offset as much as one‑third, and in some cases nearly half, of their annual BC Hydro bill.

Free smart thermostats (a $350 value) will be available in fall 2026 for homes with electric-baseboard heating, helping automate savings and improve comfort.
New rewards for residential customers will provide the ability to earn as much as $200 per year, plus additional bill savings from using less energy.
Enhanced support for income-qualified households can earn them as much as $325 annually through expanded programs, in addition to bill savings, from making energy-efficient choices.
A new mobile app will be launched in fall 2026, making it easier for customers to track usage, access programs and manage their accounts.
Instant rebates at checkout can lead to with savings of $10 to $200 on energy-efficient products at more than 300 stores throughout B.C.
N@nickgottlieb.bsky.socialMay 20, 2026, 7:16 PM

Industrial users—whether it's LNG, mining, or data centres—should be required to pay for their new generation capacity rather than shouldering the workers of BC with those costs. BC Hydro should be forcing them to do that through these kinds of programs as a first line 3/

N@nickgottlieb.bsky.socialMay 20, 2026, 7:16 PM

This is not pie-in-the-sky. @rewiringamerica.bsky.social published a report on it last year for the US. Household upgrades can add grid capacity at far lower cost than new generation projects while simultaneously lowering consumer costs + reducing emissions 2/ www.rewiringamerica.org/research/hom...

rewiringamerica.orgNew report: Household upgrades could offset all new projected data center energy demandOur report, Homegrown Energy, finds household upgrades are the best, fastest solution for increasing energy demand.

Agree with all of this, but also, if we're launching a billion dollar campaign to reduce electricity consumption to free up power for new industrial users...the industrial users should pay for it. They should be buying everyone heat pumps, replacing windows, etc. This has potential to be win-win 1/

EEmily Lowan (she/her)@emilylowan.bsky.socialMay 20, 2026, 6:58 PM

Imagine what we could do with those savings instead. A heat pump in every home. A community-owned renewable grid. Thousands of good, union jobs and affordable, clean energy. That’s what the BC Greens are offering.

I know he called it a "sovereign wealth fund," and it's a little more dressed up—the money will go to his friends in finance who own fossil fuel companies and are investing in oil + gas infra, not to election deniers—but Mark Carney is basically doing the same thing.

This is Trump and his Republican allies stealing your money from the U.S. Treasury to further their plot to overthrow democracy. It's fucking outrageous. (NYT gift link)

Cuba has experienced doctors who have volunteered to fight ebola outbreaks before. They've sent doctors all over the world, for decades. Problem is, the criminal USA is threatening every country that accepts their medical missions, cutting off medical care and impt source of currency for Cuba.
