These are indeed the right questions. We have empirical evidence that strongly suggests the immediate impact of AI is seriously harmful to learning, and since learning is cumulative, likely will have long-term harmful consequences. (That purple area is the direct measure of harm)

Lovely, and giving vibes of Henri Rousseau…

Been having similar thoughts as I make my way back through Kubrick’s oeuvre — the sexism and racism is shocking really

No martini is made in this household without the glass first chilling in the freezer for 10 minutes minimum

Humankind remains a work in progress, and there are reasons to worry about the future. But then one makes a gin martini using Tanqueray no. 10 at the conclusion of an insane week, and all feels well in the world.

Great recommendation! Thanks. And I agree at some boundary the question of life becomes challenging. Still, past that borderland we agree that animals are alive, and my view is that then we start discussing degrees of consciousness (not a binary yes/no).

Strong opinions loosely held, as my late mentor Jim March counseled :)

@benjaminjriley.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 8:02 PM

We have a more definitive line when it comes to organisms of being alive or dead. That is the line I’m suggesting is relevant to the consciousness question.

@benjaminjriley.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 8:00 PM

I think they can never be conscious, from what I’d like to think is an intellectual position, based partially on my understanding of both LLMs and neuroscience, plus the other disciplines of cognitive science (philosophy, linguistics, and the oft-neglected but vital field of anthropology )

@benjaminjriley.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 7:55 PM

This might be cargo culting the living experience of being an organism, don’t you think?

I’m curious @tressiemcphd.bsky.social if Elaine Scarry’s The Body in Pain ever made your reading list? Hugely formative to my understanding of the body and consciousness, civilization and cruelty.

I think you mean madeleine, oui?

@benjaminjriley.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 7:43 PM

My views on this have likewise changed, I agree that the mythological separation of mind from body, and also treating the former as purely a computer, has created quite a mess.

Yes, agree completely, both Western and relatively recent, all things considered. If you have…time…(sorry) you might enjoy this essay on prior human cultural conceptions of time: stevenmintz.substack.com/p/the-hidden...

That's well said. Borges posited Funes the Memorious, a man immobilized because of his inability to forget, rendering every object & experience unique at any moment in time. On this view, the ship-of-Theseus mental model is essential to learn - to forget a difference.
