Hey @atproto.science ppl 👋 which researcher profiles do you actually keep updated?

e.g. @orcid.org, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, university/lab page, LinkedIn, funder CV's (NWO, ERC, NIH biosketch), Academia.edu, conference apps...

Anything else...? Which ones do you never (or hate to) update?

Recap of yesterday's CIDS assembly at TUD @tudresden.bsky.social

Philipp @lorenzspreen.eurosky.social had a proper booth for the Synosys poster. I brought an A3 print, and people found that funny. That's a resource allocation problem. The real value was the conversations, so here they are 🧵

Quadrant 1 of the A3 poster “Open science on open infrastructure”, CIDS Mitgliederversammlung 2026. Headline: “Empowering science communities”. Text: open, democratic, researcher-owned infrastructure for publishing, curating, sharing and discussing research, built on the AT Protocol. Three points: a community, an ecosystem, a movement. Two QR codes: the @atproto.science Bluesky account and “Join the community”.

yet another example of scientists vibing better ways to navigating conferences because the current system is trash.

we (atproto) have a real surface here if we can get a cohesive solution into the hands of conference attendees and organizer #atdev @atproto.science

Any updates? :)

What if researchers owned their accounts, their data and their networks? We think they should, and we are building it. @atproto.science

Tomorrow we will show it at the CIDS assembly at TU Dresden, with Philipp @lorenzspreen.eurosky.social

I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS!! 6+ months of work by SO many people is converging on a fantastic thing for researchers online. We want to democratize access to research infrastructure online, for good, and we've put together an amazing team to make it happen. ❤️

The modern research ecosystem of online tools and communities is controlled by for-profit companies. But we think that researchers should be the priority - not the product. So, we're announcing Aster ID: not-for-profit Atmosphere account hosting for researchers.

This is going to be big, kudos to the @aster.id team.

We can just transform research, together 🤝

I made a little social bibliography atproto app. You can post papers you read and see what your friends are reading. Paper info autofills from links, and it exports to bibtex. There's chronological and following only feeds, maybe more to come, and you can organize papers into lists for your own use.

We heard there were a lot of @atproto.science discussions here... Watch this space ;)

(and welcome @mirascience.bsky.social !)

Stay tuned for a project from us that is funded though - we'll include who the funders are in that announcement.

@atproto.scienceSep 23, 2026, 3:38 PM

ATScience is a volunteer community and movement! We do not have funding as this entity. Individual projects relevant to ATScience are (1) not necessarily run by ATScience volunteers, and (2) may or may not have funding.

I'm convinced that open social protocols like #atproto have a crucial role to play in the future of science.

"A counterculture does something else entirely. It finds the ungoverned space, builds the parallel system, and reaches the audience first. The mainstream is then forced to respond to something it had neither authorised nor understood." Great theory of change for science (and a lot of other fields)

A counterculture does something else entirely. It finds the ungoverned space, builds the parallel system, and reaches the audience first.

The mainstream is then forced to respond to something it had neither authorised nor understood.

It’s less about heroism and it’s also not about victimhood.

It is more of a niche-serving approach.

You find the use case the dominant system cannot see, or cannot afford to serve, or has actively written off as worthless. You build for that. You make it work for the people who need it. And you let the alternative become obsolete not by confronting it, but by making it irrelevant.

That is the crux of it.

Very cool project connecting atproto with the Underlay knowledge graph protocol

"[The Underlay] is an archive. [atproto] is a wire. Together they give a collection both permanence and real-time distribution."

And check out these neat #ATScience examples too!

www.underlay.org/blog/2026-04...

Concrete examples
A research lab runs a PDS using custom lexicons for their experimental data and publications. The bridge watches their repository and pushes daily snapshots to mylab/datasets on Underlay. The PDS is the lab's active workspace. The Underlay collection is the permanent, citable archive.

A journal pushes article records to Underlay through its publishing platform. The bridge writes each new article to a PDS. The journal's output is now part of the AT network, discoverable in any client that understands the lexicon. A Bluesky user can follow the journal's DID and see new articles in their feed alongside social posts.

A library wants to preserve a set of public collections. It runs its own Underlay instance and mirrors them. It also subscribes to the AT Proto relays for those accounts and indexes the firehose for its discovery interface. Same data, two access patterns: archival via Underlay, real-time via AT Proto.

Best to start here and reach out to projects that interest you. Good luck with your project.
