Trains could be a lot better in many places, but I also think that expecting perfection is always going to bring some disappointment too. Even when trains are delayed it's much more comfortable of an experience than flying

@emily.spaceOct 11, 2026, 1:19 PM

I find the expectation that all trains must be perfectly on time a little unfair, given that the private sector form of transport (flying) often has regular and huge delays

it is very funny to watch

> try and train problem solving skills in education settings that can't be automated with AI. Still have no idea how to do that though 🫤 aside from lots more exams, but that's really tedious

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 6:55 PM

Yeah, imo even without more studies we should assume the worst (repeated AI use hurts problem solving skills) and already try to find ways around it. Anecdotally, I definitely think this is the case based on the types of issues that students I teach often have now. I'd love to see new ways to >

w social longs for data on their haters so that they can leak that too

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 6:46 PM

Yeah, this. AI brings a lot of really amazing options for progress (and the rise of ML was already a 10 year-long soft launch of this), but it's overshadowed by all the Dr Evils running around in Dr Evil Laboratories trying to make a new god seemingly just because they can

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 4:25 PM

ah yes, the cabal of evil pds operators that can only be defeated by scanning and publishing the contents of people's passports online

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 4:15 PM

Sounds awesome!! Important to realize the dust has nothing to do with the Pleiades (it's about 50% closer to us than the Pleiades is, ie it's also super far from the Pleiades themselves) makes them pretty stars to look at but isn't a part of them in 3D

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 4:14 PM

sounds like a very meh use of ai, I'd much rather we find better ways to support real humans doing real science communication than automate all connection out of our lives

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 3:17 PM

Woaaaahhhh that is SO cool! And you even have open graph images so it's pretty when shared! This is AMAZING. This is definitely something more people in astronomy should see, it could be so so useful for visualization and outreach stuff. A planetarium that runs on any device in the browser. Amazing

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 3:15 PM

Yes, this is amazing! I think some tools (like World Wide Telescope) already do some query stuff, but having this as a pure CSS forkable thing is amazing. I want to use this for an upcoming project already šŸ˜…

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 2:31 PM

If there happens to be a way to make this something other people can use and add other data to then I suspect it could become something people would use to visualize real datasets in-browser, just in case you're interested šŸ‘€ showing data in cool and accessible ways is often a problem we have

> the galaxy's warp (see eg fig 5 here or just search for milky way warp) which means it isn't perfectly flat

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 2:30 PM

Oh oops, I didn't try zooming out enough to realize that you DO have galaxies in this and a Milky Way artist's impression - that's amazing! So one more Milky Way comment - you could also try a) somehow rendering it as not being a flat image but something with width, and b) also somehow show that >

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 2:23 PM

I probably don't have time to video call about this but you can tell by this thread that I think your project is sick, so feel free to ping me for random astronomer checks on things if you want haha

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 2:23 PM

Also.also, OpenSpace is fantastic planetarium software that includes a lot of real scientific data. You can keep zooming out and get to Milky Way stuff, distant galaxies, and more, and that might also be a good inspiration source

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 2:21 PM

@mac0598.bsky.social has an excellent personal website with a very cool visualization that includes the dust map, clusters from catalogue, and a Milky Way artist's impression. That'd be good inspo for what to add cswigg.github.io/cam_website/

@emily.spaceOct 10, 2026, 2:19 PM

A good choice would be to try and render a dust map like this one somehow to get the location of dust in the galaxy correct (at least locally).

You can grab data easily with this package too: github.com/gregreen/dus...
