Last month, your faithful co-host @nicholaskaufmann.bsky.social was in conversation with science writer Mindy Weisberger about her new book RISE OF THE ZOMBIE BUGS: THE SURPRISING SCIENCE OF PARASITIC MIND-CONTROL at the Brooklyn Books & Booze Author Book Fair.

WAVE (1994)
Acrylic on Canvas - 48” x 48”

Of all the paintings hanging in my home, this one probably elicits the most comments. #art

An exponential curve expressed as a massive wave of green-blue water that climbs to vertical against a sky of puffy lavender clouds. Light breaks through the cloud cover just over the horizon casting a flat glare across rippling water before the wave climbs. Fin-like ridges emerge running up the wall give the water turbulence and dimension.

I long to one day have a monogrammed sporran.

I am real, I checked. I don’t know what it would take to be a fake one… yes, I wrote those. I’m very glad you enjoyed them!

Saw a post about AI thinking and so feel compelled to remind everyone that we can't even come to something resembling a consensus about what thinking even is, let alone how it happens. You can literally get a PHD is not knowing how we think.

I won’t promise a hug but I feel like the ending has some closure. Maybe that’s enough?

Was thinking about a book or series I love to see adapted. @davidwellington.bsky.social's zombie series came to mind. Kirkman's The Walking Dead series has salted the genre since. But some of the ideas in Monster Island, and sequels were very creative. The vampire and werewolf books were good too.

my personal view is that you should treat AI as if you were a magician attempting to command a spirit that is inhuman, potentially useful, and invested in attempting to convince you it is something other than it is. you know, rationally.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).

A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

Strange New Worlds. They’ve given up on any kind of continuity and now every episode is just… What if Trek but in Black and White?
