The varied thrush is an all-year resident of parts of the northwest, and seasonal in many other parts. As seen in tonight's 9 o'clock photo, orange and grey can be a beautiful thing, when properly worn. They tend to be somewhat secretive, but not so much as, say, wrentit. Near Mt Adams, 10 Oct 2026

A bird is perched on a limb of a fir tree. The lower neck is orange, but there is a grey-brown stripe from the front of the face, through the eye, and ending at the midpoint of the neck. There is an orange stripe above this mark making a defined eyebrow patch that continues to the back of the head. The back of the bird is also mostly this same grey-brown, with a number of orange wing bars. The underparts fade from the orange at the lower neck to a mixture of spots that are white mixed with orange on a grey background.Range map from All About Birds shows winter range extending up into most of Alaska, all-year range along much of the coast from northern BC to northern California, and winter range extending from eastern Washington to southern California.

Large studies on over 1 million hip/knee replacements show robotic surgery didn't reduce early repeat surgery risk compared to traditional methods, even with its precision. For patients, this means no early benefit from the added £1,000-£2,500 cost per procedure.

People are claiming that Elon Musk messed with Starlink in Ukraine because Trump asked him. I think a more likely reason is that Ukraine damaging Russian data centers embarrassed Elon by showing how many of his Twitter followers are nonexistent and how much traffic on Twitter is driven by bots.

Kyiv should stop relying on goodwill and press European governments to buy satellite service on its behalf under binding contracts, with continuity guarantees and penalties, so a cutoff would carry legal and financial consequences rather than depend on one owner's discretion.

Traditionally, lavender in the northwest peaks around August. I really shouldn't be seeing them in full bloom in the middle of October. However, as seen in tonight's 9 o'clock photo, here we are. This isn't an isolated example either. Many across region in bloom. Galdstone, Oregon 11 October 2026
