Can we teach dogs to express their needs better by pressing buttons? How about bonobos? What have we learned from the first-ever recording of a sperm whale birth? In this episode we get enthusiastic about how people use technology to enhance our communication with these three animals!

Update: now linked to from our zines page too so people doing the challenge can find it even if they're not on bluesky!

@lingthusiasm.comOct 9, 2026, 6:38 PM

ps we're also huge fans of your linguistics colouring book pages 🖍️

@lingthusiasm.comOct 9, 2026, 6:37 PM

We also used google slides to make digital versions of our zines, it's great for people who don't have a lot of graphic design background like us! We did do handwritten prototypes to start which I found helps with making it flow a little more organically than starting digitally, but ymmv

Ooh those are great, thanks for sharing them!!

And as an example of a much lower-effort zine: I made this one years ago (in <1 hour) for class. (An example of mid-term presentation option for research papers!) The quotes are sourced from twitter--perhaps even from you!

Text:
Linguistics is
the scientific study of
language. Linguists
apply the scientific method
to conduct
formal studies of
speech sounds and gestures,
grammatical
structures, and
meaning
across the world’s
6000+ languages
-The Linguistic Society of AmericaA colorful heading in the middle of the page reads “Engaging with Media”

A quote on top:
“In third grade I read frindle by andrew clements and became obsessed with the idea that the only thing that makes a pen a “pen” is that we all arbitrarily agree that it is!”

And below the heading:
“I was a lonely escapist teenager so I read Tolkein and I became an avid LARP player. Then I started learning quenya to write poems about elves - but to do it, I needed to learn what lenition is and reconstruct some of the quenya case system.

Next page:
A colorful heading reads Language is Cool, with cool underlined. Between the lines of the heading are quotes:

“In elementary school I had like a week where I “discovered” p/t/k are articulated in the same places as b/d/g respectively, and it blew my mind”

“Met a lot of people who speak more languages than me and was like whoa”

If you’re looking for an existing zine, humbly for your consideration~

sites.google.com/view/speechp...

Most variation is non-random and full of information that helps us use language.

It’s actually pretty neat

People use different words and different sentence structures.

Each of these equally valid English sentences tells us about a similar event, but they tell us different things about what to focus on and who might be talking:

I gave that food to some dogs
Nutrition was administered to canines
Them dogs was fed

Linguistics is the systematic study of the structure and use of human language. The study of physical properties of language–sounds or signs–is called phonetics.
Okay? Okay!
Perceiving sorts differing pronunciations into this-or-that categories that are specific to each language.

[Under “differing pronunciations,” there are six circles. On the left, the circle is solid dark gray. On the right, the circle is solid light gray. In between, the dark gray splits into spots, and the light gray splits into stripes. In the middle circles, there is a bit of both light stripes and dark spots. Under the circles are the words ‘bit’ (dark gray circle), ‘spit’ (mixed circle), and ‘pit’ (light gray circle), with the ‘b’s and ‘p’s highlighted. Under “this-or-that categories” are six solid dark gray and light gray squares. A large B is by the leftmost dark gray square; a large P is by the rightmost light gray square]

We call these sound categories “phonemes.” They combine into words.

[To the left of the text is a triangle with rounded edges. A series of lines and dots create a continuum of shapes in 4 bands: dark gray, light gray, white, lightest gray. On the left side of the triangle is a series of dark gray diagonal lines. Next to them are lighter gray lines which tilt progressively until they’re horizontal lines. Then, they split off and become sparser. Next to that are even lighter gray dots. To the right of that is a triangle with straight sides and sharp corners. This triangle has solid colored lines corresponding to the pattern in the rounded triangle.]

[A diagram shows a square and sharp-sided triangle, labeled “Category”, above a circle and rounded triangle, labeled “Specific Pronunciation.” An arrow pointing up from the round shapes to the straight-sided shapes is labeled “bottom-up”; an arrow on the other side pointing down is labeled “top-down”.]

These categories exist only in our minds–at a “higher,” more abstract level than actual speech. Stuff we know about our world at this higher level–even if we don’t know we know it–can have “top-down” impacts on perception.

We talked about concrete poetry a bit in a recent bonus episode but didn't have the name for it, so I've already learned something from looking up the name! Looking forward to learning more from your zine!

@lingthusiasm.comOct 9, 2026, 3:28 PM

Totally counts, we look forward to seeing it!!

I was absolutely already planning a zine about portuguese you dont have to sell me on it further 👀👀👀👀

@lingthusiasm.comOct 9, 2026, 4:11 AM

Not gonna lie, when Marco was like, well, all my books are in Portuguese, do you think your listeners would still be interested in them, you were who we were thinking of when we replied "we're highly confident there will be at least one entry"

This sounds really fun! I’ve never made a Zine before but I’ll try my best to put one together on language learning by the deadline!

@lingthusiasm.comOct 9, 2026, 12:34 AM

Well, that's the end of the anticipated questions, if you have any questions we didn't anticipate, let us know! And we're excited to see your zines and zine stories by November 30th!!!

@lingthusiasm.comOct 9, 2026, 12:32 AM

If you're a teacher or prof, yes, your class can make zines about linguistics! EITHER send a entry for the class (prob. younger students, please allow students to opt out of public sharing) OR suggest students send in their own submissions (if you want them to be eligible for individual prizes)

@lingthusiasm.comOct 9, 2026, 12:29 AM

Yes, you are welcome to enter zines that are all or partly in languages other than English (we hope people do!), the form is in English though Yes, you can submit as a pair or a group, it's up to you to figure out how to share any prize
