Introducing PressProgress’s New Executive Editor
Rumneek Johal, former Associate Editor and BC Reporter, steps into new leadership role
This is good context following Doerkson's decision to drop Joachim Agou as the party's candidate in Victoria-Beacon Hill over racist social media posts That's a no-hope riding for the Cons but some BC Conservative incumbents who have made homophobic comments are still running in strong Con ridings
Candidates for the BC Conservatives have likened education about the 2SLGBTQ+ community to "grooming," referenced Jan. 6 conspiracies and questioned COVID vaccine safety. Right after we published this, tweets from another candidate surfaced where he joked about killing pro-Palestine activists.

On a new @pressprogress.ca 🔴SOURCES🔴 @ericwickham.ca and @techwontsave.us' @parismarx.com take listeners inside the fight against data centres in Canada in a conversation about the growing number of municipalities pushing back in their communities.
Sharing this again because this is a story about an issue impacting communities all over the world making its way to the suburb I grew up in. I'm so happy with how this turned out. Also, the more people that listen, the more likely Rumneek will let me spend time making radio docs. LISTEN NOW.

I have so much hope for the future of this publication. We may be navigating some rocky waters right now, but I have full confidence that when we recover, we can rebuild our team and expand our coverage of the stories that our audience cares about most. Please support us if you can.
Our readers have already helped us get this far—but the fight isn't over yet.
Chipping in $25, $50, or whatever you can afford right now will help us weather this lawsuit and defend Canadians' right to know.
A lawsuit, one that's become the largest in Canadian media history, is threatening to silence us and set a chilling precedent for Canadian journalism. We know people want to see our voices erased from the media landscape. But there are so many stories that progressives need to tell.
But as a result, many of those right-wing figures are trying to put a stop to our work and eliminate progressive voices like ours from the media ecosystem with lengthy and costly lawsuits that tie up our resources and prevent us from continuing to do our jobs.
We often went after the “big dogs”— the wealthy and powerful elites in this country who are actively making things harder for working and vulnerable people in this country.
With your support, PressProgress grew from a scrappy little news outlet to an award-winning team of respected reporters, breaking stories every week on everything from social inequality, to right-wing politics, to labour, health and more.
🧵 PressProgress was born out of the desire to have a progressive voice in the media landscape, and to counter the abundance of far-right narratives that try to hinder the future progressives are actively trying to build.
My second article for the day is about this morning's historic BC Supreme Court ruling in favour of the founders of the Drug User Liberation Front (DULF). The judge praised DULF's work, said a safe supply is necessary to save lives, and threw out charges of drug trafficking.

The latest from associate editor Emma Arkell!
My first story on the health beat is about the law that keeps 90% of Ontario's healthcare workers from being able to take strike action. It's being challenged by the Ontario Nurses' Association, but in the meantime, unions like CUPE say employers rely on the law to avoid bargaining in good faith.

Activists Win Pause on Data Centres in Mississauga, but Questions Remain About Provincial Regulation
Mississauga "one of the first big cities to address this matter and push back against this data rush”
