Students made their first minicomics in my intro making course - mostly standard format but this student, a first time maker(!), did something so off the charts I’m still reeling from it! & he made like 12 of them for his classmates! A paper engineering feat of flipbookery as well as killer drawing!

I also appreciate that while the filmmakers stay focused on the fight at UPS, the spectre of Amazon looms in the background, dragging wages and working conditions down for everyone. The film also briefly features the chant "Amazon Prime? White collar crime!" which is kind of a banger

Such a pleasure to see this at VIFF today! Who Moves America does a fantastic job of immersing you in the work of organizing and then grapples with the sense of victory and relief, but also disappointment, that comes with an eleventh-hour agreement.

This is good context following Doerkson's decision to drop Joachim Agou as the party's candidate in Victoria-Beacon Hill over racist social media posts That's a no-hope riding for the Cons but some BC Conservative incumbents who have made homophobic comments are still running in strong Con ridings

Candidates for the BC Conservatives have likened education about the 2SLGBTQ+ community to "grooming," referenced Jan. 6 conspiracies and questioned COVID vaccine safety. Right after we published this, tweets from another candidate surfaced where he joked about killing pro-Palestine activists.

my hand holding a purple I VOTED sticker that has an outline of the Vancouver city skyline, as well as logos for the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Votes on it. you can see my green pants and purple/green shoes behind the sticker, as well as the grey bench I'm sitting on and the sidewalk below it.

Nice! I also really didn't want to wait around for the invite, I'm glad they opened things up a bit this year.

@emmaarkell.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 6:16 PM

Important to note that you don't have to wait for an invite/notification to make an appointment. I was able to book a COVID/flu shot appointment for the 13th earlier this week.

Every fall, year after year, my colleagues & I give the same interviews on the reality of sexual violence on campuses. In *2007*, I co-founded a group at Carleton that spent 7 years (!!) fighting to get a sexual assault centre on campus. (We won) Time is a flat circle under rape culture.

Statement from Connor Bildfell, president of the Canadian Bar Association's B.C. branch, on personal attacks on judges following last week's ruling re: the Drug User Liberation Front

Some recent media commentary on the Supreme Court of British Columbia’s decision in R. v. Kalicum has moved beyond criticism of the decision to attacks on the character and fitness of the judge who made it.

Court decisions can and should be subject to careful scrutiny and vigorous debate. People who disagree with a decision may speak out and challenge its reasoning, and our justice system gives parties an appeal process for challenging decisions where appropriate.

But attacking a judge’s character or fitness—even calling for their removal—goes too far. These kinds of personal attacks risk eroding public confidence in our justice system and collapsing the important distinction between criticizing a decision and attacking the judge who made it. Judges speak only through their decisions and are unable to respond publicly to such personal attacks, making them particularly inappropriate.

Judges must make their decisions based on the law and the evidence before them, after lawyers present arguments to them. While a healthy debate about the merits of those judicial decisions promotes democracy and the rule of law, personal attacks do not.

this empty apartment building is voting ABC 🫡

an election sign for ABC's Sarah Kirby-Yung sits next to the sign for Hemlock Tower, which in turn has a sign on it that says "waiting list." the white building behind it is at least five stories tall. nothing in the windows or on the balconies.
