sometimes I get in my head about the world and I get sad, and then I have a dinner with a group of people and I remember the internet is an anger/despair amplifier and I feel better
for sure! and I think people should do what works best for them. for me, the amount of "check with me first" I'd require makes me doubt it would net out to any actual time or executive function saved
this is a classic for a reason: "the biggest conflict in any relationship is choosing what to eat tonight" we CANNOT automate or delegate a ton of this stuff because we won't be the same people each time the cron job runs
a lot of the automation talk seems to assume that we are all, beneath all of the "friction" or "toil" or whatever we're calling it, rational I am NOT rational right now I want a cheeseburger. tomorrow I will not an optimistic version of myself will book the early flight. future me hates that guy
something I don't like about the current state of tech is how things are actively moving to secret/unwritten rules in an effort to prevent AI from gaming systems. backchannels have always been a thing (both good and bad) but feels like they're becoming the ONLY option
😅
thank you!
no, Twitter/IG are the loan shark in the analogy. do it their way or else. any atproto provider doesn’t have that same leverage, even if it’s still not *easy* to leave
I think I disagree there. even if it’s not perfect it’s still better than other existing approaches. like getting a loan from a bank vs. a loan shark. still stuck in both cases but the path out of one scenario is significantly better than the other
definitely. and ultimately I bet it’ll be someone like Google that runs the most popular implementation of this, just like email. number portability isn’t freedom from big businesses by any means; it just means I don’t get stuck forever with my first carrier
we need to mature the tools for sure, but the fact that the option exists is huge. there’s not even a pathway out for other networks, technically inclined or otherwise
even if bsky nukes your account, all your data can still be accessed in other tools and via API. that’s fundamentally different from ig, X, etc. it all needs to mature, sure, but it’s already an improvement in ownership and control
agreed! but power comes in lots of shapes, and getting a large mass of people to care generates a lot of power (which is a communication problem)
I don't think it *requires* government regulation, but I do think if the public focus lands on "your identity online should be YOURS" then proposed regulations would follow
we don’t need to explain atproto. we need to move the Overton Window to get people asking why it’s considered normal that a company can unilaterally control (and destroy) part of our identity and we just… let them
