what do atproto spaces mean for decentralization, hosting, moderation, and the public broadcast protocol?

drive up Mt Hamilton to the historic Lick Observatory. lots of great views and casual hiking along the way up. or in the other direction drive up to Skyline Blvd and walk around in redwoods or open grass fields. in San Jose proper I think food is the thing

i'm pretty sure HAL was driven insane by cold war politics and contradictory human instructions, mostly off-screen in the theatrical release? i'd chalk it up to governance, not engineering.

the duration and bitterness of north/south tension over race in the south is just stunning in this telling (eg, first third of Master of the Senate, 1840s though 1950s). insane how much it spills over to all other politics. definitely interested to read more about reconstruction period.

@bnewbold.netOct 8, 2026, 11:34 PM

timely reading nationally: how did the civil rights stuff getting dismantled today get passed in the first place? and personally: parliamentary rules and structural power relevant to atmosphere governance needs (vastly different scale/tone/stakes ofc)

the nuances and highs/lows of political press are really interesting to get a feel for over many scales and situations. a lot of the myth of these books is that LBJ was a wizard and relentless about details. but he just gives up at times, and has lots of unforced errors as well. eg 1956 DNC

got very far along before I realized Root+Brown later led in to KBR, linked to Haliburton, Dick Cheney, etc! popular frustration with Great Depression eventually put the fear in elites, but man it was so very bad and broken for so many years to get to that point.

some personal reading notes on "Years of JBJ" (I'm most of the way through Master of the Senate): big utilities, banks, railroads, and resource extraction being shitty is such a long through-line. and winning over and over.

other times "no sacrifices", meaning we shouldn't expect users to accept inconveniences. both of these informed from hard lessons in earlier protocol ecosystems (like SSB). I like the "no steps backward" phasing better

we talked about this a lot in the early days.

IIRC @pfrazee.com would phrase it as "no compromises", meaning don't accept degraded product experiences in the interest of protocol purity. change the protocol until it works.

GM. It’s not that atproto is illegible to devs or even civilians but inscrutable via the systems of power that have taken over the internet. The sin of social media wasn’t technical but aligning with the desires of established power and ours is the long hard work of breaking that alignment.

1) on a pure evidence base the US has repeatedly engaged in information operations. You can even find procurement examples to manipulate youth in Iraq. Obviously with cases like stuxnet - you know there’s milder stuff.

already bumped to 5000 account limit

the original issue was that it wasn't proxied, it was just called directly on the PDS (but you might know better, I haven't looked in a while)

@bnewbold.netOct 8, 2026, 7:46 AM

this is a bit weird, and should probably be changed in the app. but might help debug. an old known issue (maybe fixed?) around this is that if somebody was on the same bsky mushroom PDS and migrated away, the old account would be 'inactive' and folks trying to mention them would break

1
@bnewbold.netOct 8, 2026, 7:45 AM

what PDS implementation is aster running? I think there might be a quirk where the bsky client app ("social-app" codebase) asks the PDS to resolve handles to DIDs right before creating the record. if the PDS doesn't resolve handles for "remote users" it could fail
