I am angry tonight. Because tonight ICE shot a New Yorker. They shot a New Yorker while his five year old child was in the car. ICE makes this city less safe. We want them out. Now.

I think it’s unconscionable that we are willing to move heaven and earth to find money for stadiums, but seemingly incapable of doing the same to prevent the closure of schools. My constituents are outraged. They are right to be. There’s still time to fix this, but we’re going to need to lock in.

By openly supporting Manchester City, Pep Guardiola—former manager & current "global ambassador with City Football Group"—risks squandering the goodwill he has built up supporting causes like Catalonian independence & Palestine. I wrote this for @gqmagazine.bsky.social www.gq.com/story/manche...

screenshot that reads:
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola, City’s stratospherically successful manager, risks squandering the goodwill he has built up supporting causes like Catalonian independence and Palestine. Guardiola posted on X: “I want every single @ManCity fan to know I am here; more than ever. I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran, the players…and you, our unique supporters.” But only a few years ago, he said of club brass: “If you lie to me, the day after I am not here. I will be out and I will not be your friend any more.” Will the real Pep Guardiola please stand up?

City’s slick public relations machine has helped sell us the comfortable delusion that whatever is happening somewhere over *there* isn’t happening *here*. As this case is finally revealing in full, the UAE’s abuse of power is happening right on our doorstep. josimarfootball.com/2026/10/05/m...

Let's not forget, this isn't Manchester City’s 1st run-in with corruption allegations. In 2014, Gianni Infantino, then head of UEFA, ran interference for his Abu Dhabi pals. Der Spiegel concluded “Infantino cut secret deals with Manchester City” to help them avoid penalty www.gq.com/story/manche...

Manchester City exec Simon Pearce once responded to a question about whether club staff could retroactively doctor financial documents by stating, “Of course, we can do what we want.” Whatever happens on appeal, that brand of arrogance has won itself a thunderous rebuke www.gq.com/story/manche...

From Etihad's "RESPONSE TO CLAIMS RAISED ABOUT STATE-OWNED AIRLINES" filed with the US gov. in 2015. "The assertion that the Abu Dhabi government paid for Etihad’s sponsorship of English Premier League football club Manchester City is [...] false".

The assertion that the Abu Dhabi government paid for Etihad’s sponsorship of English Premier League football club Manchester City is equally false. In 2011, Etihad and Manchester City entered into a 10 year sponsorship agreement, which included naming rights for Manchester City’s stadium. Etihad funded this sponsorship from its own liquidity. It is not uncommon for airlines to have sponsorships with sports teams and their venues.

I wrote about the Manchester City scandal as a textbook case of sportswashing in plain sight. In our whipsaw age of impunity, some potential accountability—if not comeuppance—for Manchester City is conspicuously refreshing. For @gqmagazine.bsky.social www.gq.com/story/manche...

The City case should be a starting point for naming and understanding the ways in which football has been colonised by economic and political power and how we might resist them.

I have advocated in the past for announcers addressing the off-field gendered violence committed by athletes during games. But I am coming around to the belief that this is a bad idea. These men cannot handle the assignment and aren’t qualified. They could learn, yes, but they won’t.
