Here is a #poem...

Leaving

When I tell you that I don't care
You absent mindedly touch your hair

When I tell you that I am done
You open the box of doughnuts and take one

When I say that I have had enough
You give an ornamental pillow a fluff

When I stand and turn to go
You begin to look up very slow

When I take that first loud stride
You finally put the doughnut aside

When I say that it's too late
You toss your hands and rage 'thats just great'

When I simply just don't turn back
Your voice raises in a panicked attack

When I open the front door
You sob breathlessly on the floor

When I leave because we're through
You cough out 'but I love you'

Who truly were the gods
Who sought to catch whose eye,
Who turned to capture, hold by rod,
Who rarely let one of us pass by?

Which made the mortal needed,
Which engaged the struggle’s course,
Which offered counsel sinistrous,
And never showed remorse?

Was Zeus the just, with thunder crowned,
When vows were broken at his whim?
Or Hera, wounded, wrath unbound,
Whose jealous stars grew dark for him?

Did Ares know what courage meant,
Or merely thirst for crimson fame?
Did Aphrodite’s sweet ascent
Leave every faithful heart the same?

Did Hermes, quick with silver tongue,
Call every theft a clever art?
Did Apollo, praised by old and young,
Mistake his beauty for a heart?

Poseidon shook the earth and sea,
Yet could not still his raging breast;
The Fates spun every destiny,
But never taught themselves to rest.

And Hades, lord of shadowed halls,
Was judged by those who feared the night;
While Dionysus broke the walls
Between the holy and the blight.

Their temples rose, their praises rang,
Their names were carved in marble white;
Yet still their passions clawed and sprang,
As mortal as the flesh they slight.

For man can grieve and still be kind,
Can bear the wound and choose to mend;
Can look upon another’s mind
And call the stranger, too, a friend.

The gods possessed the endless years,
The strength to bend the stars above;
Yet mortals, bound by death and fears,
Could give what gods could not: true love.

So let the thunder claim the sky,
Let idols glitter, cold and grand;
The godliest among us die—
And, dying, reach to hold a hand.
