After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
I’m not saying the merchants of chaos feel bound by long established rules or by the law, but these are the strongest basis for opposition to their destruction.
This is a great reminder for people interested in NIH grant selection that there are elements that are codified in the law by Congressional action.
We considered putting up something like this, and we were approached by well meaning folks demo-ing versions of it a couple of times! But yeah, couldn't justify a self-censorship tool.
It is truly exhausting to see this kind of organizational cowardice (not to mention the stunning disrespect and abysmal preparation).
@noamross.net on NPR this morning.
"I am always enthusiastic about more investment into science, but you could think of this as someone planting a tree somewhere where THEY just burned down a forest. We've lost so much scientific investment under this administration."
I stole this line on the radio this morning! Thanks and sorry :) www.npr.org/2026/10/09/n...
This is misleading. Comparing ‘26 to a 10-year average is a poor choice. Interesting to claim a “record # of early career awards”issued solely from R01 ESI grants. What about Ks, or I dunno every other award type that early career ppl get…
There's new research just out about this, but at NSF: osf.io/preprints/so... . First-time CAREER grants went up, but new investigator share plunged in every other mechanism, and especially for researchers at non-R1 institutions.
CDC has had to close down country offices overseas due to lack of funding... but the political leaders were able to use funds from global health security for this inappropriate and unethical study instead. Very clear what their priorities are
Thoughts on the intersection of findings that the administration diverted $1.4B in NSF funds away from investigator-initiated research and today's New Golden Age of Science Summit showcasing the White House's preferred political priorities of what constitutes 'science'.
CDC offices "in Angola and South Sudan closed Thursday, with the office in Zimbabwe set to shut its doors at the end of the year. Current and former CDC officials told POLITICO they expect more than a dozen other foreign offices will follow in the next few years."
Arithmetic in the "New Golden Age of Science" at NSF:
Reduce $600M in STEM funding between FY25 and FY26
grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...
Propose to reduce NSF GRFP fellowships by $180M in FY27
nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/FY-202...
Declare "success" w/a $100M "push" for US scientists.
They're also going to announce that all mayonnaise will now be gluten free.
👀
Not sure about all of them, but NSF GRFP certainly are.
ah damn, RIP Margaret Hamilton.
she took safety-critical software engineering seriously, and got people to the moon and back.
