Part of the work of this moment is to insist on and expect compliance — and ensure that any noncompliance or efforts to lie to or otherwise mislead courts remain unacceptable and to be investigated thoroughly whenever they happen. They must remain seen — and responded to — as an aberration.

That is just simply wrong. And yet, this nonstop insistence from some that we live in that reality helps those in the administration who do support such lawlessness.

There is a dangerous tendency of some to call something “the truth” based on an incomplete picture of reality. Too often, people take what has happened in a few high-profile cases — and even then, it’s often more complicated — and insist that there is an across-the-board fact of noncompliance.

Bluntly, I do not want to — and just can't — deal with it constantly. I am working nonstop to explain what's going on, but people insisting on doom not only do harm by helping Trump and his minions — but it also causes harm to the lawyers and activists fighting back and to those of us covering it.

And, specifically, when you insist on replying to me with it — and I do not mean good-faith questions or analysis, but rather knee-jerk "they'll ignore it"/"there are no consequences" pablum — you tell me that you (1) don't actually know what's happening and (2) aren't attempting to understand.

I said this in a thread last night and in a thousand threads before it, but you really are doing the work of those who would destroy democracy and the rule of law when you are a doomer. You can be aware of — and vigorously oppose — the lawlessness of this administration without insisting on doom.

Keep writing. Get fellow alums to do the same. Send a letter to Yale Alumni Magazine. We have to be able to break through to them somehow.
