Weigh in with your concerns Oct. 19.

Looks like communities are doing what Ohio lawmakers should have done on data centers: due diligence.

OPSB hearing: 5 gas plants already approved to power Meta Prometheus data centers in New Albany-- 3 through accelerated review-- with no public notice or hearing.

If approved, it will be 4th gas plant for this facility for a total of 1150 MW.

Save Ohio Parks board president Cathy Cowan Becker testified that NEO and other gas plants to power data centers are driving increased fracking of Ohio state parks and public lands.

More than 15,000 acres of Egypt Valley Wildlife Area and Salt Fork State Park were approved this year, three times more land than in the previous three years combined.(Save Ohio Parks Photo)
Mark Rylance testified about the likelihood of the AI bubble bursting, taking with it promised jobs and prosperity and leaving communities to clean up the mess.

If this takes place, he said it would also leave behind massive fossil fuel buildout no longer needed to power data centers. (Save Ohio Parks Photo)

Marilyn Welker, Urbana resident and founder of Simply Living, testified about the dangers of fine particulate matter to children, noting that 6,600 children live within three miles of where NEO is proposed to go.

She pointed out that the Meta gas plant Socrates South is now operational, so particulate matter is already spreading across the community. (Save Ohio Parks Photo)

New Albany resident Noah Malik listed pollutants from the NEO gas plant, including 3.5 million tons of greenhouse gas; 197 tons of fine particulate matter; 243 tons of nitrogen oxides; 172 tons of volatile organic chemicals; 189 tons of sulfur dioxide; 245 tons of carbon monoxide; and 40,200 of hazardous air pollutants such as benzene and formaldehyde.

He asked the power siting board to deny NEO to protect his community. (Save Ohio Parks Photo)

60 attended Oct. 6 Ohio Power Board Siting hearing in New Albany for NEO gas plant to help power Meta Prometheus data center.

3 plants were approved with no public notice or hearing.

Why wasn't hearing held in Licking County, where gas plant would be built?

From left are Save Ohio Parks volunteers Cathy Cowan Becker, board president; Shannon Flanders of Westerville; and Rebecca Malik of New Albany.

Save Ohio Parks board member Malik testified about moving to Ohio from Washington, D.C., and choosing New Albany due in part to its beautiful environment. Now, she said, it's threatened by NEO and six other major gas plants approved and proposed to power data centers. (Save Ohio Parks Photo)
Mimi Plevin-Foust, board member of Faith Communities Together for a Sustainable Future (FaCT), spoke of her father, who grew up in Weirton, W.Va., which has ranked among U.S. cities with the worst air quality because of fine particulate matter.

He developed pulmonary fibrosis that killed him in his 70s. She said now that we've cleaned up air pollution, we should not release it again with gas to power data centers. (Save Ohio Parks Photo)
Molly Scott, nature educator at Healthy New Albany, asked the Ohio Power Siting Board how she should explain to the children she teaches that the state would approve a major gas plant, knowing the pollution it would create and the harm that pollution does to children and communities. (Save Ohio Parks Photo)

Buckeye Environmental Network board member Greg Pace testified that NEO alone would create over 100 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of toxic, radioactive gas and oil fracking waste brine per year, which would be disposed of in Class II injections wells - where it often migrates into other wells and now threatens drinking water in Marietta.
