We finished the playtest campaign of @jenkatwrites.bsky.social 's "Before the Season Ends" today and it was both sad and wonderful.

The game is a true gem and I can't wait to see the finished version! It really gets at the core of female friendship, emotions, societal pressure, and more. ๐Ÿ‘

Another guest for Season 1 is Robert Bohl, a writer and the author of the TTRPG โ€œMisspent Youthโ€ and supplement โ€œSell Out with Me.โ€ While Robert is not in the scene anymore, his games have had a lasting impact and came up often when talking to other designers. He kindly accepted to speak with us.

Yes! I'd love that

Well, I have the digital files I got on IPR, so I could put the cards on a PCIO setup... Maybe during a break I'll work on it. :)

The cards are well-written, creating the tone and the dread that one would expect from a space horror setting, but also leading players on a satisfying narrative progression.

In short: recommended!

... which sorted cards at the beginning of the game, and created a limited space for playing - it got really claustrophobic by Act 3! The hack follows the three-act structure of Desperation, adding a clever and theme-appropriate twist at the end. I won't reveal anything, but you should try it!

Last weekend, @backwardsttrpg.bsky.social, @jenkatwrites.bsky.social and I played "Xeno: Desperation" by @planesailinggames.com, an Alien-inspired blue-collar horror hack of Desperation by Jason Morningstar.

It worked really well, particularly with the great PCIO online setup that Alex created...

Haha yes! I'm afraid that I won't be able to make the game fit in an 80-minute window, but I can always bring it and tell people about the unique perspective that the game takes, and students are usually intrigued

Yeah! I have to admit that I'm still partial to blackboards and chalk, which I always prefer, but whiteboards are pretty good too! And corkboards for notes!

@czamboni.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 11:22 PM

Haha yes! Sadly my Teaching Assistant ran the game (I was running Desperation), so I have yet to try this gameeee! But I will!

... based on the readins from the Zagal and Deterring volume. Well, the mood boards (below) were truly beautiful and evocative and everyone felt really inspired, creating some very good ideas for games! I am very curious to see what these students will develop.

@czamboni.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 6:59 PM

During class, two students also created an interactive presentation with mood boards that different groups used as a basis for an RPG pitch, featuring at least a theme, some story highlights, one mechanic, some characters, and a type of immersion they wanted to focus on...

@czamboni.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 6:58 PM

All three games worked very well in an 80 minute window, though we had to make some adjustments in the set up and remove a few cards from Desperation and Making History. All recommended!

@czamboni.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 6:57 PM

Take a look at the great board of theories students developed during Making History!

Wednesday's class was about tabletop role-playing games and it was just great.

We played Desperation and Zhenya's Wonder Tales by @jmstar.bsky.social as well as Making History by Jonathan Proctor and @cmichpress.bsky.social.

Yep, I took out my old CDs, DvDs, and Hard drives. I am extremely tired of streaming services.

I believe we will be in at least one panel together! :)

I am completely overwhelmed with work and with emails right now, so if I am late in replying to anything, please be patient and perhaps send a reminder. I was sick and fell behind, and then everything snowballed - as it often happens. It's not you, it's the workload! Thanks for understanding. ๐Ÿ’™

A great interview with the amazing @bkuehner.bsky.social - who visits my class every year and will be with us again next week!
