Particularly enraging edition of Nimby Watch this week.

Quite. Almost like history is useful.

This skewers David Brooks' ludicrous double wrongness in scolding Ossoff for skewering his opponent's neo-Nazi links. One advantage of facing opponents who are such blatant wrong'uns is you can justifiably name your enemy and declare war. As Ben says, a bit more of that here would be welcome.

Yes, Politico rather curiously insisted earlier that Burnham stating the obvious on Russian interference was somehow a gaffe.

Maybe after the midterms they could send all their remaining members of Congress to Washington state.

Real conspiracies and conspiracy theories tend to be structured quite differently. There's a great paper on this by a UCLA computational folklorist called Tim Tangherlini. I spoke to him about it here:

it was never much of a secret that Russia tried to influence elections. It was those on the losing side of a couple in 2016 that then turned that into the *explanation* for their results

That assumes Hegseth would clap his hand to his mouth in horror at the realisation he was degrading humanity.

But isn't he a portrait of voluntary degradation, trying to force everyone else to join him down there in his moral gutter?

You'd hope so, yes

Eleven months ago I DM’d Mr Palmer on Bluesky asking if he could recommend any freelance Chinese reporters… and that’s how long my torturous editing process takes. But it’s a pretty fun read! Especially London developers boasting about the investment case for British NIMBYism.

This reminds me of the abhorrent Tuskegee Experiment, which ran in Alabama from 1932 to 1972 and involved deliberately not treating black men who had syphilis - to see what happened.

Pretty much the GOP as it was before Trump.

Important report from the Civil Defense Institute: The Trump administration added 'Border Hawk News" to the White House press pool last month. Its editor-in-chief is an Alex Jones type conspiracist and an avid promoter of Great Replacement bigotry

But maybe if lots of powerful people close their eyes, cross their fingers tight, and wish *really* hard, everything will soon be 1997 again.

@philtinline.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 1:11 PM

Haven't looked at it closely tbh

*real one

@philtinline.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 12:30 PM

In the doc, we contrast the narrative structures of the JFK theories with Watergate, and of Pizzagate with Bridgegate. The latter being the real in each case.

Hi Sharon!

Ha, indeed. My theory is Jack Ruby was in cahoots with several publishing companies.* *I do not actually think this. That would be ludicrous.
