"The jubilee is about being proud of who we are.The word 'hillbilly' has been used to degrade us, dismiss us, and dehumanize us.It's also been used by grifters like J.D. Vance to exploit our people, place, and stories.But many of us reject that framing and instead are reclaiming the word 'hillbilly"

was on the ground tonight in the Bronx as protesters were arrested and Darializa Avila Chevalier was shoved trying to protect them from NYPD outside the hospital where the man shot by ICE earlier today was being treated. details on his status are still scant.

I am angry tonight. Because tonight ICE shot a New Yorker. They shot a New Yorker while his five year old child was in the car. ICE makes this city less safe. We want them out. Now.

ICE can't be reformed. An agent shot and injured a man in New York City on Thursday afternoon with his 5 year old in the car. Our communities are not safe with ICE around. Abolish ICE.

Today, we grieve the violence and destruction and our complicity in it. And we commit to working for a world where Palestine is free and all of us are free. 🕊️🍉

We must take this as an opporunity to keep organizing, keep up the pressure, and keep fighting.

Because of powerful Palestinian-led organizing in our country, an unprecedented number of Americans now reject that lie and support and end to the killings and occupation.

@surj.orgOct 7, 2026, 4:27 PM

Through decades of Islamophobic and anti-Arab propaganda, our government has laid the groundwork to convince Americans— especially white Americans— that we’re safer when we fund genocide instead of healthcare. War instead of public schools. Bombs instead of social services.

@surj.orgOct 7, 2026, 4:27 PM

Three years into the genocide in Palestine, tens of thousands of lives stolen, communities destroyed— funded by billions of American tax dollars. Palestine is a racial justice issue!

More than 500 U.S. citizens have been detained by ICE, according to ProPublica. 70% of ICE detainees have no criminal conviction. Trump’s promise to go after the “worst of the worst” was always a lie. It was always a pretext to terrorize Black and brown communities. Remember this.

This also set in motion a series of events that led to the passage of the 1965 Civil Rights Act. She continued to organize until her passing in 1977, and her legacy continues today in movements working toward liberation for everyone.

Her speech, which was broadcast widely despite President Lyndon Johnson’s attempt to redirect attention to a White House press conference, brought her to national prominence.

At the 1964 Democratic National Convention, she argued that because Black people were not allowed to vote in Mississippi, the state’s Democratic delegates were not legally elected.

She was also a gifted orator and singer, moving people into action. She helped organize the Freedom Summer Project in 1964 to challenge Mississippi’s Democratic Party, which was dominated by white segregationists.

From joining the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), to registering her neighbors to vote in a time when Black people were threatened with violence, to participating in the lunch counter sit-ins and being brutally beaten and permanently injured for life in jail, she was unshakable.

She grew up working in the cotton fields with her family and by the time she joined the Civil Rights Movement in 1962, she understood and lived how racial justice was tied to economic justice.
