OTD in 1881, Charles Darwin published his last book, on earthworms.

It reflected a long interest in animal minds: β€œOne alternative alone is left, namely, that worms, although standing low in the scale of organization, possess some degree of intelligence.”

So glad to hear you're going! Wish I could be there, both for the conference & Denver-area field trips, but saving all of my pennies & time for the IPC meeting in Cape Town. Have fun there learning & meeting friends old & new!

Hurricane Isaias's effects here in the metro Atlanta GA haven't been as dramatic as expected, with high rainfall & gusting winds late last night, some storm damage, & power outages. Looks like we were lucky this time, now hoping the best for people who were & are in its direct path.

For #Caturday, appreciating our oldest cat Tao (pronounced TAY-o because we're in Georgia) for his love of life, which includes his human servants. He's wearing a harness because he's leash-trained, allowing us to take him on walks in mornings & evenings.

Siamese cat named Tao (pronounced TAY-o) with blue harness looking over his left shoulder while being held by an oldish white dude with silvery hair and beard, wearing a long-sleeved burgundy t-shirt.

October 9 is Nautilus Night, part of the International Cephalopod Awareness Days. The nautilus is a very unusual looking creature; a cephalopod like the squid or octopus, which grows its own shell. They are known as β€œliving fossils,” having survived relatively unchanged for millions of years. πŸ§ͺπŸ‘πŸ™

Science storytelling FTW! Last night's Atlanta @storycollider.bsky.social event was fun & meaningful. I started us off with a tale about not finding/finding dinosaur tracks in Australia, followed by 4 folks with personal stories related to science. Thanks to our coaches, Meisa & Emma! πŸ§ͺ #scicomm

Fossil taxa are sometimes considered island weirdos without any actual evidence that island effects were important in their evolution. So we wrote a paper on how we could do actual island biogeography in deep time. If you want a copy but can't access it, email me: www.nature.com/articles/s44...

I couldn’t let the announcement of a new Tyrannosaurid pass without illustrating it. So here’s my take on the new kid on the block: Tromerosaurus solumons.

In 2019, NMNH debuted new casts of the Stegosaurus and Ceratosaurus skeletons originally collected by Marsh’s teams. Ceratosaurus was casted and assembled in-house, but Stegosaurus was made by RCI. Getting them to fight took great care, and some cardboard stand-ins. #FossilFriday
