We've got an evening of poetry at Book Haven this week: Thursday 15 October at 6:30pm. The poets are Jackson McCarthy, Rebecca Hawkes and Dani Yourukova and they'll be reading poetry that reminds them of home. #nzpoet

It was so great having pip in the shop on BookShopDay. pip read a fantastic piece of writing about reading & books & AI & technocrats - along with a delve into Elon Musk’s reading list! Hideous! I do hope the essay will be published at some stage. Thank you so much @pipadam.bsky.social

The nz titles on the blackboard are: We Will Not Cease by Archibald Baxter, Washday at the Pa by Ans Westra, A Way of Love by James Courage, Into the River by Ted Dawes, The Butcher Shop by Jean Devanny, & Safe Marriage by Ettie Rout. International books include Fahrenheit 451, Beloved, & Ulysses…

It’s #BannedBooksweek2026, so on the blackboard are titles of some books that have been banned, including some by nz authors. And we also made word finder puzzles with banned authors and their books. They're on the counter, so grab one when you're in BookHaven perusing the shelves. #bannedbooks

At BookHaven we continue to get requests from companies to buy our secondhand books for LLM training & we continue to refuse those orders. It’s frustrating! & that’s why we thought it’d be great to have pip adam chatting about ai & technocracy & community & bookshops! #aotearoareads #bookshopday

@bookhavennz.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 8:27 AM

pip’s the author of kluge - a “story about the end days of a tech company and its all-powerful owner”… & as #nzbookshopday is all about community & bookshops & reading books created by real people & available in real shops - we decided to ask pip to pop in to BookHaven on Sat 10 Oct at 12.30

@bookhavennz.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 8:20 AM

It’s BookShop Day on Sat 10 Oct & @pipadam.bsky.social will be in BookHaven at 12.30 for a wee kōrero on ‘ai & technocracy & community & bookshops’. pip knows lots about the evils of AI companies & the joys of books written by real people & available in real shops - so come on by on #NZBookShopDay

It’s the start of daylight savings so supposedly there’s a bit more light (in the evening). So the window theme this week is ‘light’. Books include: ‘Daylight Second’ by Kelly Ana Morey, ‘Clear Light of the Day’ by Anita Desai, ‘Splinters of Light’ by Rachael Herron, & ‘Skylight’ by Jose Saramago.

Thank you so much Bryce Galloway for last night's talk at Book Haven about your wonderful book 'Zines NZ' - we've had good feedback. It was an inspiring wander through stories & histories of zines and zinemakers in this country!

Sorry, we've sold out of Dirty Work - but we do have more that will be turning up in the shop hopefully soon. We pre-ordered copies even before we knew the title or price... We'll let you know when they turn up.

@bookhavennz.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 1:54 AM

When searching "Dirty Work Nicky Hager" we got this image of Meghan Markle (I didn't recognise Meghan Markle)...& we don't normally use Microsoft Edge... But we've got 4 copies of 'Dirty Work' left in the shop, so if you're in Newtown, drop into Book Haven & get a copy #NickyHager #DirtyWork

Tusiata Avia was unable to be there yesterday but we were lucky enough to have Emelihter Kihleng. I first heard Emelihter at Tadra Vata. Her books are rare in this country, but do keep an eye out for them: ‘My Urohs’ & an anthology with Evelyn Flores ‘Indigenous Literatures from Micronesia’.

@bookhavennz.bsky.socialSep 19, 2026, 10:19 PM

Sunday 20 September 4-6pm Tusiata Avia & Cristian Hadad are both at the Office Bar in Newtown! Exciting stuff! We have brand new copies of Tusiata’s ‘Fale Aitu / Spirit House’ & ‘Giving Birth To My Father’ in the shop. Tusiata’s poetry is fabulous!

And it’s so appalling that it’s the same week that the government is discussing three bills to weaken te Tiriti obligations. The Bills change references in laws that say ‘uphold’ or ‘honour’ the Treaty and replace them with wording that say only ‘takes into account’. #ToituTeTiriti

It’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - ‘Ake, Ake, Ake – A Forever Language’ - we’ve got books in the window & out on display celebrating not only te Reo Māori but also books by Māori authors & books about this land. For te Reo to be a forever language, we need to know the stories & histories of this land.

Aotearoa has a vibrant zine history and Bryce Galloway's book 'Zines NZ - Punk to Present' tells that story. It's a tribute to zines & zinemakers & the often underground, self-publishing scene. Come along and join us at Book Haven Thursday 25 Sept at 6.30pm for a conversation with Bryce. #zines

A shoutout for Audition: shortlisted this year for the Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction - check out the awards & pip’s video.
pip says about Audition, it’s “…fuelled and powered by the energy and hope I feel for the abolition of prisons everywhere..." congratulations pip! @pipadam.bsky.social
