#Insects expend energy to stay airborne, but how this cost changes with speed has remained unclear. This #RSOS paper measured the energetic cost of flight across a range of airspeeds in #bumblebees, desert locusts, blowflies and hawkmoths: doi.org/10.1098/rsos...

Bee brains are smaller than a sesame seed and have less than 1 million neurons (we have 86 billion).
They are however highly intelligent - can add/subtract, get the concept of zero, solve puzzles and recognise faces!

Extraordinary that Buff-tailed Bumblebee came top in the vote. Must be the least familiar of the final four. NOT a Honey Bee and just any bumblebee. Here’s one celebrating. 😉

A macro photograph of a coral-red flower beaded with round water droplets after rain. In the centre of the blossom, a fuzzy bumblebee with yellow and black banding rests on the seed head, covered in pollen. The flower petals radiate outward in rich reddish-pink tones, contrasted against cool, soft-focus blue-grey leaves in the background. The lighting is soft and diffused, creating a serene, damp garden atmosphere.

On returning to the nest foraging #bumblebees fly back and forth fanning their wings secreting a pheromone which encourages other workers to go foraging on flowers with the same scent as the returning bee.

Bumblebees have hearts but they are not ❤️ shaped.
Bee hearts are straw shaped organs and run the entire length of the body.

Taken yesterday. Pollinators still very busy. If you look closely, you can see the bumble's tongue! #pollinators #bumblebees

Please be vigilant.

Help them out as quickly as possible as if they get exhausted and perish that is a potential colony that will not get to exist next year.

Time trapped is time not foraging and energy wasted!

So now you know what these big autumn-flying #bumblebees are!"

about the big #bumblebees you’ll have noticed lately.
These big girls will have been fed differently to female workers as they developed in the nest - queens, as with males, need more food and for longer periods when developing as larvae.
After emerging they continue to live in the nest

every queen that survives is a potential colony that gets to exist. So back in early spring queen #bumblebees emerged from hibernation and you would have noticed these big girls flying around looking for food and a suitable nest site.
Now in late summer/autumn we have a new batch of queens out and

some out meaning more colonies next year.

Deal?

And every colony counts!

Spoiler alert:
The big #bumblebees around in Autumn are new queens.
They’re feeding up before hibernating.
It’s vital they have access to forage.
If you find one trapped in a poly tunnel/in your house let her out quickly -

"You’ve been seeing very large #bumblebees on the wing for the past while.

Why?

Okay I’ll tell you why in this quick thread if you promise to #repost as the more people who know that these are queens the more likely that someone will help

Research suggests that about 1 in 5 hibernating queens will not survive hibernation.

After emerging they continue to live in the nest although as ‘royalty’ they do not contribute to the functioning of the nest.
They forage only for themselves to build up the fat reserves required to see them through their hibernation over the winter.
These queens will…
